Blending the TaylorMade P7CB and P770 for the Ultimate Combo Set

Amateur golfers can take a cue from Tour players by not being afraid to opt for irons that offer additional help and forgiveness, particularly in the long irons. This was evident when Rory McIlroy and Collin Morikawa adopted the prototype TaylorMade P7CB iron during recent tournaments. The P7CB irons were tested by co-host Kris McCormack at TaylorMade’s Kingdom headquarters in Carlsbad, California. McCormack, a low-launch, low-spin player, found the cavity-back design of the P7CB appealing, even though he was initially hesitant due to the forgiveness factor. He found the 6-iron surprisingly easy to hit, but felt that the 4-iron might not be the best fit for him, given his skill level.

McCormack’s co-host, Wadeh Maroun, suggested that McCormack could blend the more forgiving 4- or 5-iron from the P770 set with the P7CB set to achieve a more comfortable fit throughout the bag. The P7CB irons feature a forged hollow body construction, FLTD CG, and SpeedFoam Air technology, while the P770 irons include advanced tungsten weighting for enhanced workability and forgiveness. Maroun, who also prefers a blade iron but values forgiveness, opted for a full set of the P770 irons. He emphasized the importance of selecting irons that offer forgiveness, especially as swing speeds may decrease with age due to physical constraints.

Maroun highlighted the benefits of tungsten weighting in the P770 irons, which results in advanced workability and forgiveness for players. The advanced forging process used in the P770 irons produces pure shaping, soft yet solid feel, precision-milled grooves, and optimal spin control. The Tour-validated contours, progressive offsets, and thin toplines inspire confidence in better players, while the tungsten back bar in the 3 through 7 irons allows for low, centered center of gravity placement and increased moment of inertia. This combination of forgiveness and workability is ideal for players looking for a versatile iron set.

As golfers age, Maroun acknowledged the need for irons that provide some assistance and forgiveness to accommodate physical limitations and ensure an enjoyable and sustainable playing experience. Selecting the right irons based on individual preferences, swing characteristics, and physical condition is essential for optimizing performance on the course. For those looking to update their bag with new irons, finding a fitting location, such as True Spec Golf, can help assess the best options based on individual needs and preferences. By considering factors such as forgiveness, workability, feel, and playability, golfers can make informed decisions about their iron selection to enhance their overall performance and enjoyment of the game.
