Ian Gilligan, a 21-year-old senior at the University of Florida, is set to make his PGA Tour debut at the Shriners Children’s Open in Las Vegas this week. Gilligan, who goes by the nickname “Gilly,” earned his spot in the field by winning the Southern Highlands Invitational with a score of 8-under 208, beating Oklahoma’s Jase Summy by one shot. This victory came after Gilligan transferred from Long Beach State, where he was a second-team All-American. Despite facing a rare form of lymphoma at age 15, Gilligan remained positive and continued to pursue his passion for golf.

After undergoing seven months of chemotherapy, Gilligan’s golf game was put on hold, but he eventually returned to the course and found solace in the game. In 2019, he competed in a Korn Ferry Tour event and was named the 2021 Nevada Golfer of the Year. Gilligan continues to see an oncologist annually for check-ups and has passed the five-year mark since his cancer diagnosis. He wears a Livestrong bracelet as a reminder of his battle and serves as an inspiration to others facing similar challenges.

Gilligan’s journey to the PGA Tour has been a testament to his resilience and determination. Despite facing adversity at a young age, he remained focused on his goals and continued to work towards his dream of competing at the highest level. In July, Gilligan received a sponsor’s exemption to the Barracuda Championship and finished T-40, demonstrating that his game is Tour-ready. Now, he is looking to make an impact at the Shriners Children’s Open and further solidify his place in professional golf.

The support of his high school teammates and the inspiration he provides to children at the Shriners Children’s Hospitals serve as additional motivation for Gilligan. He understands the importance of giving back and helping others facing challenges similar to his own. Through his journey, Gilligan has connected with others on social media who have reached out to him for support and guidance. His positive attitude and determination have made him a role model for aspiring young golfers and individuals battling adversity.

Gilligan’s story is one of perseverance and resilience, and his presence on the PGA Tour is a testament to his strength and courage. As he prepares to compete in Las Vegas, he is focused on making the most of this opportunity and continuing to inspire others with his journey. This week, fans can expect to see “Let’s go, Gilly!” cheers as he takes on the field at TPC Summerlin and showcases his talent on a national stage. His performance at the Shriners Children’s Open could be a turning point in his career and solidify his status as a rising star in professional golf.
