Avoid These 3 ‘Death Moves’ While Swinging, as Advised by Jordan Spieth’s Coach

Cameron McCormick, a GOLF Top 100 Teacher and Jordan Spieth’s longtime coach, recently discussed swing “death moves” in a video on his Instagram page. These death moves are mistakes that golfers make that can have negative consequences on their game. McCormick highlighted three specific death moves and offered tips on how to avoid them. The first death move involves getting the arms stuck behind the body, leading to a loss of connection in the swing. McCormick demonstrated a fix for this by ensuring the right arm stays in front of the shoulder throughout the swing.

The second death move discussed by McCormick is staying in wrist extension too long in the downswing, resulting in an open clubface. He suggested closing the face by turning the logo of the club away from the golfer towards the ground. The third death move involves an overactive, high-right shoulder and early rib-cage rotation, causing steep angles and poor wrist extension. McCormick recommended focusing on hip movement and keeping the back muscles engaged to correct this issue. These tips aim to help golfers improve their swing mechanics and ultimately lower their scores on the course.

In another post on his Instagram account, McCormick addressed common mistakes in chipping and pitching. He identified a chipping death move as tipping the upper body to the trail side of the lower body, leading to inconsistent contact with the ball. To correct this issue, McCormick advised golfers to tip their upper body to the lead side and maintain that position throughout the stroke. By leaning in the proper direction, golfers can improve their chipping and pitching technique and increase their chances of making solid contact.

To help golfers identify and address these chipping mistakes, McCormick recommended using an alignment rod and shooting a face-on video to monitor body positioning during the swing. By visually observing their movements, golfers can make the necessary adjustments to improve their performance around the greens. Additionally, McCormick shared a series of short-game drills and tips to help golfers enhance their skills and confidence in various situations on the course. These resources offer valuable insights from top instructors to help players elevate their game and achieve better results on the golf course.

By incorporating McCormick’s advice on swing and short-game mechanics, golfers can enhance their overall performance and enjoyment of the game. Implementing proper body alignment, arm positioning, and swing movements can lead to more consistent ball striking and improved accuracy on the course. With a focus on avoiding common death moves and utilizing effective practice drills, golfers can elevate their skills and elevate their game to the next level. As players continue to refine their technique and mindset, they can experience greater success and satisfaction in their golfing endeavors.
