Deciphering the ins and outs of ‘winter rules’ according to the Rules of Golf

Winter can bring challenging conditions to golf courses across the country, making it difficult for golfers to play off fair lies. This is where “winter rules,” also known as Preferred Lies, come into play. These rules are covered by Model Local Rule E-3 and allow players to lift their ball in the fairway and place it in a more favorable position. This temporary rule is typically implemented during the colder months when course conditions may not be at their best.

The committee in charge of the golf course is responsible for setting the size of the relief area where the ball can be placed. This distance is usually measured in inches or club-lengths and uses the original location of the ball as a reference point. Once the ball is lifted, players can clean it or replace it with a different ball before placing it in the designated relief area. This process allows players to navigate challenging conditions such as going from fairway to rough or from fairway to fringe.

Winter rules should generally only be used in the fairway of the hole being played. Extending these rules to areas outside of the fairway could result in players unfairly obtaining free relief from locations where the ball may have been unplayable, such as in a bush or group of trees. Once the ball is placed using the outlined procedure, it cannot be lifted again and must be played as it lies. This ensures fair play and maintains the integrity of the game.

Implementing winter rules is a great way for golfers to extend their playing season and enjoy the benefits of the sport for as long as the weather permits. These temporary adjustments help accommodate challenging winter conditions and allow players to continue playing while ensuring fair competition. Todd Stice, the USGA manager of Rules technology and education, emphasizes the importance of understanding and following winter rules to make the most of your golfing experience during the colder months.

In conclusion, winter rules provide golfers with the flexibility to navigate challenging course conditions during the colder months. By allowing players to lift and place their ball in a more favorable position, these rules help maintain fair play and extend the golfing season. It is crucial for golfers to familiarize themselves with Model Local Rule E-3 and understand the procedures for implementing winter rules on the course. By following these guidelines, golfers can make the most of their golfing experience and enjoy the game even in less than ideal weather conditions.
