Golf is a sport that is full of unique actions, and one of the most recent examples of this was seen at The Sentry tournament, where Viktor Hovland showcased his ‘double-pump’ golf swing. Hovland, a multiple-time PGA Tour winner, was playing in his first event of 2025 and stood at four-under-par through his first 31 holes. The moment that caused the biggest reaction was at the driveable par 4 14th, where Hovland used his double-pump swing to great effect. This unique movement may seem unconventional, but Hovland has explained that he uses it strategically in certain situations on the course.

In a 2019 interview, Hovland mentioned that his normal driver swing creates a little cut, but the double-pump allows him to hit the ball further and straighter in specific circumstances. At The Sentry, the double-pump worked wonders for Hovland as he was able to stick his 300-yard tee shot on the green and make an eagle attempt for two. This method is not limited to Hovland, as players like Seb Twaddell from the Long Drive circuit also use the double-pump to maximize their ball speed. Twaddell holds the ball speed record of over 240mph, showcasing the effectiveness of this unique technique.

Despite not possessing the same insane numbers as Twaddell, Hovland was able to make an eagle and another birdie at the 15th hole during the tournament. This was particularly impressive considering that he had broken his toe just a week prior to the start of The Sentry. Hovland shared an X-ray of his broken toe on social media, jokingly captioning it “Bed frame 1 – 0 me.” Despite the injury, he continued to improve his game throughout the tournament, culminating in a five-under 68 round on Saturday.

Hovland’s performance at The Sentry highlights the importance of strategic use of unique techniques on the golf course. While traditional swings may work for many players, incorporating unconventional movements like the double-pump can provide added benefits in certain situations. Hovland’s success with this method not only resulted in improved ball speed and accuracy but also showcased his ability to adapt and perform well under challenging circumstances. As golf continues to evolve, players like Hovland demonstrate the creativity and innovation that can elevate their game to new heights.
