Will Zalatoris and Cam Davis made a costly mistake during the final round of The Sentry golf tournament, costing them both two strokes and a significant amount of prize money, even though they were not in contention for the title. Hideki Matsuyama dominated the tournament with a record-breaking victory, leaving the other players in his wake. Davis was on track for a top-five finish, while Zalatoris was aiming for a top-10 finish. However, things took a turn for the worse on the 15th hole at Kapalua Resort’s Plantation Course.

After hitting each other’s golf balls unintentionally on the 15th hole, Davis and Zalatoris incurred a two-stroke penalty, leading to a bogey for each of them and ending any chances of making birdie. They could have been disqualified if they had teed off on the next hole before realizing their error. The onlooking Golf Channel broadcast team expressed shock and disappointment at the costly mistake made by the two players.

As a result of their errors, Davis finished T13th instead of T5th and collected $410,000, while Zalatoris ended T26th instead of T15th and earned $163,333.33. The Australian golfer missed out on $283,200, while the American player lost out on $119,866.67. This collective loss amounted to $426,491.67, a significant amount for two professional golfers. Both players chose not to speak to the media after their final rounds.

The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of focus and attention to detail in professional golf, where even a small mistake can have significant consequences. With large sums of prize money and crucial FedEx Cup points on the line, maintaining concentration throughout the round is essential. The costly error made by Davis and Zalatoris highlights the unforgiving nature of the sport and the impact that a momentary lapse in judgment can have on a player’s performance and earnings.

Despite the setback, both players will have the opportunity to bounce back in future tournaments and learn from their mistake. Davis is scheduled to compete in the Sony Open the following week, while Zalatoris will have to wait for his next chance to redeem himself. As they continue their professional golf careers, the lesson learned from this experience will likely shape their approach to the game and serve as a valuable reminder of the importance of focus and precision in every shot they take on the course.
