Review of Srixon’s 2025 Z-Star Golf Ball

Srixon has released the ninth generation of their Z-Star golf balls for 2025, with significant changes to the design and materials used. The three-piece Z-Star has always been known for its soft feel, and this remains the same in the latest version. The new FastLayer DG Core 2.0 starts soft at the center and becomes firmer towards the outside for optimal spin and distance output. Additionally, the Spin Skin+ coating increases the cover’s friction for added greenside spin, and a stronger urethane paint improves resistance to dirt and grime. The headline technology in this version is the extra thin premium urethane cover made with biomass materials derived from corn, reducing carbon dioxide emissions during manufacturing.

Srixon claims that the use of biomass materials in the Z-Star golf ball will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 30.7 tons, equivalent to 31 million plastic bottles. To test the performance of the new Z-Star, the balls were taken to Peterborough Milton Golf Club for testing on the Foresight Sports GCQuad launch monitor. Compared to the Z-Star Diamond and Z-Star XV, which are played on tour, the standard Z-Star fell short in some performance metrics such as lower ball speed and higher spin with the driver. However, it offered good spin and control on partial wedge shots, making it suitable for slower swing speeds.

The Z-Star differentiates itself with its soft feel, especially on and around the green. It feels noticeably softer off the face than other premium urethane-covered balls on the market, with minimal audible feedback when chipping. The higher flight with the driver was consistent and held up well in crosswinds, with minimal scuffs after a full 18 holes. The Z-Star offers a good balance of soft feel and short game control, making it one of the best options for players who value these characteristics. Available in both white and yellow, the Srixon Z-Star golf ball will be available from 22nd February with an RRP of £48.99 per dozen.
