Review of the Mizuno Pro S3 Iron

The Mizuno Pro S3 iron is a new addition to the brand’s lineup, designed specifically for better players with a focus on feel and control. Made using Mizuno’s Grain Flow Forged HD process and high-quality materials, the Pro S3 features a 1025E Pure Select Mild Carbon Steel with a copper underlay for the signature Mizuno feel. The club also boasts a new triple-cut sole design, including a beveled leading edge and a ‘hard-cut’ trailing edge, as well as overall geometry refinements. Visually, the Pro S3 is striking with a clean satin finish and minimal branding, making it a standout iron in terms of looks.

The design of the Pro S3 iron is notably different from previous Mizuno models, with straighter lines and a shorter blade length for a more appealing look at address. Testing of the Pro S3 was done at Saunton Golf Club using a launch monitor and TaylorMade TP5 golf balls, with results that matched expectations. The feel of the iron combines the softness that Mizuno is known for with excellent turf interaction from the redesigned sole. The smaller blade length makes it easier to manipulate the clubface and produce a variety of shot shapes and trajectories with precision.

Despite the slight cavity in the design, the Pro S3 iron is not forgiving and features conservative lofts that don’t offer additional distance. However, the iron is aimed at purist ball strikers who value feel and control over forgiveness. The user experience with the Pro S3 is described as enjoyable, with honest feedback that rewards well-struck shots and critiques poorly executed swings. Sets of the Pro S3 are available in 4-PW in both left and right-handed options, with Project X shafts and Golf Pride MCC Black-Grey grips as standard.

Overall, the Mizuno Pro S3 iron is a standout option for better players looking for a precisely crafted iron with exceptional feel and control. While forgiveness may be lacking and distance gains minimal, the Pro S3 excels in providing a pure strike experience for those who prioritize shot-making abilities. With a sleek design and premium materials, the Pro S3 is a top contender for players who value craftsmanship and performance in their golf clubs. Priced at £215 per iron, the Pro S3 offers a premium experience for serious golfers looking to elevate their game on the course.
