The G440 irons from Ping are the latest addition to their game-improvement iron lineup and aim to offer golfers increased ball speed and improved distance. With a focus on delivering distance while maintaining control, these irons feature a shallower, thinner face and a low/back CG location to promote higher-launching, longer-carrying shots with improved stopping power. Ping CEO John K. Solheim emphasizes the importance of consistency and control in iron play, stating that the G440 is the most versatile iron in their line and will fit the games of many golfers.

One key feature contributing to the added distance of the G440 irons is the next generation Ping PurFlex cavity badge. This 4-piece molded badge is more flexible than previous designs, expanding and contracting to support the thinner face while enhancing feel and sound. While the aesthetics of the G440 range may not be to everyone’s taste, the refined shaping and softer lines of the irons make them visually appealing at address. The slimmed-down profile and player-style shaping offer confidence to golfers looking for a game-improvement iron with a more traditional appearance.

Performance testing of the Ping G440 irons revealed impressive levels of playability, with poorly struck shots being flattered and preserved for distance. The wide soles helped keep the blade moving through the ground, resulting in consistent yardage and impressive ball speed output. The irons offer options for standard, Retro (weaker), and Power (stronger) lofts, allowing golfers to fine-tune the launch characteristics to suit their preferences. While the feel of the G440 irons may be on the firmer side, it remains robust and consistent across the clubface.

Although there may have been a slight regression in shelf appeal compared to previous models, the performance and playing position profile of the G440 irons make them a solid choice for golfers seeking distance and control. Available in a range of loft options and color codes, with multiple shaft choices, the G440 irons offer customization to fit a wide range of player preferences. With a retail price starting at $170 per club with a stock steel shaft and $185 per club with a stock graphite shaft, the Ping G440 irons provide a high-quality game-improvement option for golfers looking to elevate their iron play.
