Don’t Focus on the Tree, These Are the Important Updates to TPC Sawgrass

TPC Sawgrass, the host of this year’s Players Championship, has undergone significant changes to make the course more challenging for the golfers. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler noted that there have been adjustments made to the course, including lengthening some holes on the back nine. The course has been expanded by 77 yards, with new tournament tee boxes on three par-5 holes, making it one of the longer courses on the PGA Tour. Working with two-time Players winner Davis Love III, the changes were made to enhance the playing experience for the golfers.

The biggest change at TPC Sawgrass is the newly extended tee box at the 2nd hole, adding 23 yards to the hole. This alteration increases the difficulty of the right-to-left angle of the tee shot, forcing players to use longer clubs off the tee. The decision to extend the tee box was based on ShotLink data, which showed that players were still able to hit over the trees with less than a driver. Wyndham Clark, who finished as runner-up last year, expressed support for the change, stating that it eliminates the option to use a 2-iron off the tee.

Another notable change is the addition of a new tee box at the 6th hole, adding 20 yards to the hole. While the newly restored tree on the 6th tee has garnered attention, the increased distance will pose a challenge for players. Clark raised concerns about the difficulty of the hole, especially in challenging conditions, where hitting a 3-wood off the tee could lead to hitting the top of the tree. The changes to the course aim to test the skills of the golfers and provide a more competitive playing experience.

The 11th hole at TPC Sawgrass has also been modified, with a new back tee adding 15 yards to the hole and changing the angle of the tee shot. The adjustments to the fairway bunker on the left side have made it more visible from the tee, adding another element of challenge for players. Additionally, the longest par-4 on the course, the 14th hole, has seen changes to the right side cart path and the rough to penalize right misses. These alterations maintain the original design philosophy of the hole by Pete Dye, emphasizing the importance of avoiding a right miss.

Another change at TPC Sawgrass is the extension of the tee box on the 16th hole, adding 14 yards to the shortest par-5 on the course. This modification will require players to play farther right off the tee, increasing the use of fairway woods and hybrids into the green. The changes to the course layout have resulted in a revised scorecard for the 2025 Players Championship, with a total yardage of 7,352 yards and a par of 72. These modifications aim to challenge the golfers and enhance the overall competitiveness of the tournament.

In conclusion, TPC Sawgrass has undergone significant changes for the 2025 Players Championship, including new tee boxes, extended yardage, and enhanced challenges on several holes. The collaboration with Davis Love III and the consideration of player feedback and ShotLink data have led to a course layout that tests the skills and strategic decision-making of the golfers. The adjustments to the course aim to provide a more competitive and exciting playing experience for both the players and spectators. As the tournament unfolds, the impact of these changes on player performance and the overall outcome of the Players Championship will be closely observed.
