England Golf’s Men’s Squad secured a remarkable victory at the European Cup of Nations held at Sotogrande Golf Club in Spain. The team, consisting of Harley Smith, Daniel Hayes, Eliot Baker, and Tom Osborne, made an impressive comeback after sitting in 4th place at the halfway point of the tournament. They were six shots behind the leaders Finland but managed to shoot -11 as a team on Friday, propelling them into the top spot which they held onto comfortably on the final day.

Men’s Performance Manager Ben Gorvett expressed his pride in the team’s performance, emphasizing the quality and dedication exhibited by the players. The team’s exceptional round on Friday, where they shot -11 collectively, received praise from other participants at the event. The squad’s meticulous planning and preparation before the tournament, coupled with outstanding performances from players like Harley and Dan, contributed to their success.

Harley Smith, who initially struggled in the first round but bounced back with impressive scores in the following days, played a crucial role in England’s victory. His stellar performance, including a remarkable -7 on Friday, helped the team secure a 14-shot victory margin. Smith reflected on his exceptional round, crediting his accurate ball-striking and consistent putting for his success throughout the tournament.

In the individual standings, Smith finished 2nd while Hayes claimed the 3rd spot. However, it was Estonia’s Kevin Christopher Jegers who emerged as the overall winner with an impressive -14 score, winning the event by a significant eight-shot margin. Baker finished tied-13th with a score of +7, while Osborne ended tied-41st with +17 over the four days.

The England Men’s Squad’s victory at the European Cup of Nations in Spain marks a significant achievement for the team, showcasing their talent and resilience in a highly competitive field. The strategic planning, preparation, and exceptional performances from individual players contributed to their success. The team’s ability to bounce back from an initial setback and deliver a dominant performance is a testament to their skill and determination.

Moving forward, the squad aims to maintain their winning momentum as they prepare for future competitions, including a biennial match scheduled later in April. The team’s coach, Rob Watts, played a crucial role in preparing the players for the event, highlighting the collaborative effort and dedication of the entire support staff. The victory in Spain in 2025 serves as a strong motivation for the team to continue striving for excellence and achieving further success in upcoming tournaments.
