Rory McIlroy’s triumphant journey to winning the green jacket at the Masters in 2025 was nothing short of extraordinary. The final round at Augusta National was filled with ups and downs, twists and turns, making it one of the most memorable major Sundays in recent memory. McIlroy eventually emerged victorious in a playoff against Justin Rose, but the path to victory was far from straightforward. Thanks to data provided by Data Golf, we can track McIlroy’s chances of winning the Masters throughout the tumultuous final round.

At 1:50 p.m., Justin Rose teed off with a less than 1 percent chance of winning, trailing McIlroy by seven shots. McIlroy, on the other hand, was the heavy favorite with a 66.6 percent chance of claiming victory. As the round progressed, Rose started to narrow the gap, but his chances of winning remained below 1 percent. McIlroy teed off at 2:30 p.m. with a birdie on the 1st, maintaining his lead with a 66.6 percent chance of winning, while Rose’s chances slightly improved to 0.6 percent.

However, McIlroy’s round took a turn for the worse at 2:45 p.m. when he double-bogeyed the 1st, dropping his chances of winning to 45.1 percent. Rose capitalized on this opportunity, birdieing the 3rd to move up the leaderboard. As the round progressed, McIlroy lost the lead but quickly regained it with birdies on the 3rd and 4th, increasing his chances of winning to 78 percent. Rose continued to make a charge, birdieing multiple holes to put himself in contention.

By 5:54 p.m., McIlroy had lost the lead with a bogey on the 14th hole, while Rose took the top spot with a 51.8 percent chance of winning. However, McIlroy bounced back with a birdie on the 15th, reclaiming the lead with a 64.9 percent chance of victory. Despite a late surge from Rose, McIlroy managed to birdie the 17th, forcing a playoff with both players tied at 11 under. The sudden-death playoff concluded with McIlroy birdieing the 18th hole, securing his first Masters title and completing the career Grand Slam, becoming just the sixth golfer to achieve this feat.

In the end, Rory McIlroy’s triumph at the 2025 Masters was a culmination of resilience, skill, and determination. His rollercoaster journey to the green jacket will be remembered as one of the most thrilling and dramatic moments in golf history. With a career Grand Slam now under his belt, McIlroy cements his legacy as one of the greatest golfers of his generation. Congratulations to McIlroy on his well-deserved victory at Augusta National.
