Forgettable LIV Stars: The Golfers We’ve Lost Sight Of

Hey there, golf enthusiasts! Let’s dive into something that’s been on my mind—those LIV Golf stars who’ve sort of faded into the background. With so much happening in the world of professional golf, it feels like these guys have slipped right off our radar. And honestly, it kind of sucks! Golf is not exactly a super mainstream sport, and with talent being split between LIV and the PGA Tour, our attention spans are being tested. The majors and a select few PGA events seem to be the only times we rally around pro golf these days.

Where Did All the Stars Go?

So, here we are with an interesting problem: many of the players who used to be the talk of the town are now playing in near anonymity. They were the characters we loved to watch—now? They struggle to even make a splash at the majors! We all know some factors lead to this decline, like age, motivation, injuries, or just the allure of a big paycheck. Regardless of the reason, golf is simply more exciting when these players are competitive and in the mix.

Here’s a rundown of seven golfers from LIV who were once household names but now seem to have become memories. And just for some extra context, I’ll toss in their Strokes Gained stats to highlight where they’ve been struggling.

1. Dustin Johnson

First up, we’ve got Dustin Johnson. Remember when DJ was the king of golf? Just a little over four years ago, he was topping Data Golf’s rankings, fresh off a big win at the 2020 Masters. Now? He’s barely hanging out in the top 150—and that includes LIV results! In the past eight majors, he’s missed the cut six times. To put it simply: it’s rough.

I get it; the guy’s 41, has a family to support, and has already bagged two majors. But wow, does it feel like he’s really lost his edge. Watching him become a distant figure in the golf scene is a bummer for fans.

2. Cameron Smith

Next up is Cameron Smith, and here’s where it gets a bit heartbreaking. Smith captured our hearts when he won the 2022 Open Championship with that mind-blowing short game of his. Just a few short years later, he’s become an afterthought. He’s missed the last four major cuts and is barely lingering in the top 20 on LIV.

At just 28 years old, he should still have so much golf ahead of him. But lately, it seems like he’s just going through the motions, which is a huge disappointment for fans who love watching spirited competitors.

3. Brooks Koepka

Now let’s talk about Brooks Koepka. Here’s a player who was once a staple at majors, but he hasn’t had a top-10 finish in nine consecutive major tournaments. Sure, he snagged the 2023 PGA Championship, but looking at his recent performances, it’s hard not to feel a sense of loss for the Koepka who dominated the big events.

He recently turned 35, and with his talent, one can hope there’s still some fire left in him. But in the current landscape, he’s floating down to No. 72 in Data Golf, which is a far cry from the Brooks we used to know.

4. Phil Mickelson

Ah, the enigma that is Phil Mickelson! It’s a mixed bag with him; on one hand, everyone loves his Youtube antics and hot takes on social media. But when looking at his golf, it’s kind of sad. He had that spectacular moment when he became the oldest golfer to win a major at the 2021 PGA. But since then? Oof.

Now, he’s missing the top 40 in his last 10 major starts and is more known for stirring up controversy than hitting good shots. Phil, we want the lively, competitive version of you back!

5. Talor Gooch

Let’s not forget Talor Gooch. Although he was never a golf juggernaut, he’d established himself among the top 30 players in the world before jumping ship to LIV. Nowadays? He’s sitting outside the top 100, and I honestly can’t remember the last time he competed in a major.

Gooch has settled into a comfortable existence now, but for fans who appreciated his drive and competitiveness, it feels hollow not seeing him make waves.

6. Louis Oosthuizen

Louis Oosthuizen is another name that rings a bell. Remember when he managed three top-three finishes in major tournaments back in 2021? He was riding high and looking like a serious contender. Fast forward a bit, and his major finishes now read like a sad story: WD-T60-CUT-CUT-WD-T23-CUT.

Now, he’s hanging out outside the top 100, and while he still has the option to compete at the Open Championship due to his past champion status, it’s hard not to see him slipping into the sunset without much fanfare.

7. Kevin Na

Finally, we’ve got Kevin Na. At the outset of LIV, Na was a solid player sitting at No. 37 in the world. Fast-forward a bit, and he hasn’t participated in a major since 2022 and has fallen way down the rankings. We all knew he was capable, having won five times on the Tour, but it’s like he’s vanished into thin air. Honestly, I almost forgot he was still playing!

When researching for this article, stumbling across his name felt like running into a long-lost high school friend.

Looking Ahead

So, what do you think about these guys? Is there hope for a comeback? Can any of them reinvigorate their careers and make us sit up and take notice again? It’s tough to see them this way; they brought such joy and excitement to the game.

Let’s be real—golf is a better place when these players are on top of their game. Feel free to drop your thoughts in the comments below!

And there you have it—a look at some of the LIV stars we’ve sadly lost touch with over time. Golf is unpredictable, and who knows? Perhaps one of these players can rise from the ashes and surprise us all!
