Swing Into Better Golf: Top Tips for Senior Golfers

When I was in the thick of teaching golf full-time, I had the pleasure of working with a bunch of senior and junior golfers. Now, senior golfers often have more time to hit the links, but they also deal with challenges like decreased flexibility, limited range of motion, and less speed. It’s a tough combo, especially when your brain is still reminiscing about that swing you had back in the day.

But here’s the good news: you don’t have to completely reinvent your swing to see improvement. Sometimes, all it takes is a few small tweaks to elevate your game and have a blast out there. Let’s dive into four easy-peasy tips that can make a big difference for senior golfers. No overhauls here, just some smart, simple changes that could help you enjoy your next round even more.

1. Slide That Trail Foot Back

First up, let’s talk about your stance. A super simple adjustment is sliding your trail foot (that’s your right foot if you’re right-handed) slightly back behind your lead foot. I’ve done this occasionally when hitting long irons, and trust me, it can lead to much better results.

By moving your trail foot back just a smidge, you naturally create a closed stance, which encourages more hip and shoulder rotation. Even if you’re feeling a bit tight, this helps the club travel better from the inside. You might even notice a lovely draw instead of that pesky slice you’ve been battling.

Bonus Tip: Flare Those Feet

Want to go the extra mile? Try flaring both feet a little at address. This little move opens up your hips even more, making it easier for you to turn both back and through. Your body will thank you!

2. Release That Trail Leg

Let’s move on to your backswing. The lower body’s rotation is crucial, but as we age, it can stiffen up, making it tougher to hit those long, straight shots. Here’s a quick tip: let your trail leg lose a bit of flex as you take the club back.

Allowing that knee to straighten slightly helps your hips move more freely, giving you a better width and timing at the top of your swing. This reduces tension and prevents the dreaded "short and quick" move that often leads to poor strikes.

How to Do It:

  • Start with a little flex in your trail knee.
  • When you take the club back, let that knee straighten just a touch.
  • Enjoy a more fluid hip turn while staying balanced!

3. Shift Weight Forward

A common mistake among senior golfers is starting with too much weight on their back foot, which can mess with your swing’s loading process. Let’s flip that around. Start with about 60% of your weight on your lead foot. This sets you up for a natural pressure shift.

As you make your backswing, smoothly transition your weight to the trail side with a good rhythm. But remember—no swaying! Keep that weight grounded inside your trail foot when transferring it back.

4. Narrow Your Stance for Better Balance

Let’s chat about your stance. If it’s too wide, it can hinder your ability to rotate properly. A narrower stance not only aligns your center of mass better, but it also enhances your balance. You might be surprised by how much difference it makes in your rotation and weight transfer during the swing.

Try experimenting with your stance at the driving range. Use alignment sticks or tees to mark where your feet should be, and play around with the width. Even narrowing your stance by an inch can have a noticeable impact. Start small and see how it changes your ball flight, distance, and accuracy!

Here’s the bottom line: your golf swing today doesn’t have to mirror what it was 20 years ago. These tips are not about chasing after a bygone swing; they’re about adapting to what you have now.
