PXG Mustang ZT Putter Review: The New Ace in Your Bag

When it comes to putters, few brands capture attention quite like PXG, and the new Mustang ZT is no exception. This bad boy is the fourth addition to their zero torque putter lineup, joining esteemed siblings like the Bat Attack ZT, Allan ZT, and Hellcat ZT. If you’re wondering what a zero torque putter is, think of it this way: it’s designed to keep the face square throughout your stroke, unlike traditional putters that can mess with your alignment as you putt. So, is the Mustang ZT worth your time? Let’s dive in!

A Unique Design That Stands Out

The Mustang ZT isn’t just another cookie-cutter putter. It strikes a nice balance between an Anser and a fang shape, all while being milled from 303 stainless steel. This means you’re getting a classic style with a modern twist. Mini wings on the bumpers give it extra stability, setting it apart visually from the Hellcat ZT. Every time you pull this putter out, you can’t help but feel a sense of confidence—it just looks good.

Easy Line-Up, Every Time

One thing I really appreciated about the Mustang ZT is how easy it is to line up. It features a small white alignment line that runs through the back of the chassis, which makes your target feel crystal clear. The pronounced leading edge helps ensure your face is square. When you’re on the green, that’s a massive bonus for anyone looking to sink more putts.

Testing Time: Quick Greens Ahead!

I took the Mustang ZT for a spin at Scottsdale National Golf Club, where the greens were running faster than my brain could keep up with—11.5 on the stimp meter! With PXG’s ultra-thin face measuring just 0.055 inches, along with the signature Pyramid Face Pattern, this putter is engineered to enhance initial ball skid and roll. It feels firm, definitely a leap from the softer putters I’ve used before. But hey, that firmness gives you immediate feedback on your stroke, which can be incredibly valuable.

Feel and Feedback: It’s Firm, Folks

Compared to my usual Spider Tour X, the Mustang ZT feels quite a bit firmer—almost like a harsh kickback if you don’t hit the sweet spot. If you’re someone who’s still working on a consistent stroke, this could be tricky. But if you’ve mastered your game and want to feel every shot, this could be a great fit.

Short Game Savvy

While I didn’t sink many long putts during testing, I felt a newfound confidence from 8-10 feet. That’s where zero torque putters can shine. If you’re someone who has a hard time making those important short putts, this putter is definitely worth giving a try. The only downside? Distance control might take some getting used to with that firm face.

Custom Fit for the Best Experience

One of the coolest things about the Mustang ZT is the customization options. I went through a fitting process to dial it in just right, and trust me, it makes a difference. Whether it’s adjusting the length, tweaking weights, or altering the lie angle, finding the right fit is key to maximizing your performance on the green.

The ‘Reverse Honeymoon’ Phase

I’ve heard whispers about the ‘reverse honeymoon’ phase when using a zero torque putter. It’s that stage where players may initially struggle before seeing improvement, and I think I might be experiencing that. The Mustang ZT looks slightly less intimidating than some other zero torque options, even though it comes built-in with a 1° forward press. Don’t be too quick to judge this putter—the rewards often come to those who persist!

Ideal for Blade Lovers

If you’re someone who leans more towards Anser-style or traditional blade putters, and have overlooked mallet designs, the Mustang ZT should hit your radar. This premium offering has a solid craft that could really add to your arsenal. Just remember, results aren’t always immediate, but with some patience, you’re likely to appreciate what it can do for your game.

Final Thoughts

In conclusion, the PXG Mustang ZT Putter is an impressive addition to the zero torque family. With its eye-catching design, ease of alignment, and the opportunity for customization, it’s definitely worth considering. While it may take a little time to adjust, those who stick with it will likely reap the rewards from this well-crafted piece of equipment. Time to up your putting game!
