Defending Champion Nick Taylor Shares Lead at Sony Open

Nick Taylor and Kevin Roy Lead First Round at Sony Open in Hawaii

The 2023 Sony Open in Hawaii kicked off in style, with defending champion Nick Taylor and Kevin Roy sharing the first-round lead. Both players demonstrated remarkable skill and composure on the lush fairways of Waialae Country Club, setting the stage for a thrilling tournament ahead.

Nick Taylor: A Strong Defense

Nick Taylor of Canada showcased his exceptional talent by carding eight birdies without a single bogey throughout his round. The 35-year-old golfer, who triumphed over Colombian Nico Echavarria in a playoff last year, leveraged his finely-tuned iron play, a product of focused off-season practice and experience from competing in the Nedbank Challenge last December.

“I felt like my game was sharp coming over here,” Taylor stated. “Coming to a course I’m comfortable with definitely helps.”

Taylor began his round by teeing off on hole 10, quickly making birdies on holes 11 and 12. He continued his momentum with three consecutive birdies on holes 15, 16, and 17, eventually adding strokes at the second and seventh holes. He capped off his impressive round with a two-putt birdie at the par-5 ninth.

Kevin Roy: Strong Start

Kevin Roy also excelled in the favorable early conditions, accumulating seven birdies in the first 11 holes. His performance included an impressive streak of four consecutive birdies from the eighth through the 11th holes, finishing the day with a birdie on the par-5 18th.

Reflecting on his round, Roy mentioned, “I settled in after a ‘squirrely’ start that forced me to make a couple of challenging par putts at the first two holes. It’s huge to see those putts go in; I just carried that momentum the rest of the round.”

Tournament Insights

This year’s Sony Open marks the season opener for the US PGA Tour, a change prompted by the cancellation of The Sentry, a tournament traditionally held at Kapalua on Maui due to drought and subsequent water use restrictions.

Standout Performers

Taylor and Roy lead the pack but are closely followed by a group at 63, which includes American Ben Griffin. Griffin, a three-time title winner last year and a Ryder Cup debutant, also recorded seven birdies without a bogey. He is joined by Scottish Open champion Chris Gotterup, Jon VanDerLaan, and South Korean Kim Seong-hyeon in this competitive group.

Summary of the Day

As the first round comes to a close, the excitement at the Sony Open continues to build. Here’s a quick recap of key players’ performances:

With sharp performances and a competitive field, the Sony Open promises to deliver more exciting golf as the tournament progresses. Fans will be eagerly watching to see if Taylor can defend his title against rising talents like Roy and Griffin.
