The U.S. Open is known as one of the most democratic championships in America, allowing any professional golfer or amateur with a Handicap Index of 0.4 or lower to apply for entry. While the number of golfers who meet these criteria is relatively small, the fact that the only requirement for entry is skill level and paying the $200 fee makes it accessible to a wide range of players. To actually compete in the championship, golfers must go through Local Qualifying and Final Qualifying events, where they must prove themselves on the course to earn a spot in the U.S. Open.

The Local Qualifying events are held at over 100 courses in 44 states and Canada, with the top players at each site advancing to the Final Qualifying events. These Final Qualifying events feature 36 holes of golf, and take place at sites in the U.S., Japan, England, and Canada. With only 156 players eventually making it to Pinehurst to compete in the U.S. Open, the vast majority of applicants will fall short, but simply participating in Local and Final Qualifying is an accomplishment in itself.

For those who do not make it to the U.S. Open, the opportunity to play at some of the top courses in the country during the qualifying events is a significant consolation. The USGA selects prestigious venues for these events, offering golfers the chance to experience standout courses. Some of the courses that hosted Local and Final Qualifying events this year have been curated into a list of top venues, based on rankings by Golf Digest’s Course Rating panel and notable facts about the courses.

Golf Digest’s new Course Reviews section allows players to submit star ratings and evaluations of courses they have played, with tens of thousands of reviews collected from course-ranking panelists. This section offers a premium experience, including course rankings, expert opinions, bonus photography, videos, and more. Players can explore this section to discover insights and recommendations for courses they may want to play in the future.

In conclusion, the U.S. Open provides a unique opportunity for golfers of all skill levels to compete in a prestigious championship. The qualifying process, which includes Local and Final Qualifying events at top courses, offers a challenging test for players looking to earn a spot in the U.S. Open field. While only a select few will ultimately tee it up at Pinehurst, the journey through the qualifying stages is an achievement in itself. With a focus on skill and dedication, the U.S. Open remains an iconic and inclusive event in the world of golf.
