Sweetens Cove, a popular 9-hole course, is temporarily closing for the summer: Here’s why

Located in Sweetens Cove, a severe weather event caused damage to the fairways and greens of the golf course, leading to a decision to shut down for extensive rehabilitation. Rob Collins, course architect and part of the ownership group, explained that abnormal weather conditions led to freezing temperatures that affected the turf for an extended period. This closure is unprecedented in the 14-year history of the course.

Known for its unique operating model, Sweetens Cove sells all-day passes and themed experiences instead of traditional tee times. The design features large, contoured greens with multiple hole locations, creating a dynamic playing experience. Passes for the year typically sell out quickly, with players visiting from around the country to enjoy the nine-hole course.

Due to the temporary closure, refunds will be issued to pass holders with the expectation of reopening in September. Pass holders whose reservations were cancelled will receive priority access to passes for 2025 with a discount. Collins expressed regret for the inconvenience caused to both pass holders and staff members, who are eagerly waiting to resume operations and provide guests with a memorable experience.

During the closure, the course will undergo turf rehabilitation and maintenance projects that are typically difficult to complete while open. Innovative techniques, such as using a Fraze mower to remove thatch buildup on fairways and replacing greens with new MiniVerde Bermuda grass, will enhance the playing conditions. Collins also plans to make minor architectural alterations while the grass is being scalped, potentially modifying the ninth green complex.

Originally opened in 2014, Sweetens Cove has evolved from a struggling golf course to a popular destination known for its bold architecture. Despite initial financial challenges, the course gained widespread recognition through social media and attracted a loyal following of golf enthusiasts. In 2019, a group of investors, including Peyton Manning and Andy Roddick, partnered with Collins to solidify the course’s financial stability.

Collins sees the current closure as an opportunity to further elevate Sweetens Cove and address long-overdue projects. He is confident that once the course reopens in September, it will exceed expectations and continue to draw visitors seeking a unique and challenging golfing experience. With its resilience and unique appeal, Sweetens Cove is poised to emerge stronger than ever from this temporary setback.
