Analyzing Tiger Woods’ record-breaking 82 PGA Tour victories

Tiger Woods’ quest to catch up with Jack Nicklaus’ record of 18 major championships has always been a topic of conversation in the golf world. However, his pursuit of Sam Snead’s 82 PGA Tour wins has often been overlooked. This is partly due to the clear definition of major championships as opposed to the varying criteria for what constitutes an official PGA Tour victory. Snead’s total number of wins was a matter of dispute until a panel of golf historians finally settled on 82 in the late 1980s.

Snead’s impressive record of 82 wins over a long period of time has been matched by Woods, who has also accumulated a significant number of wins. At the age of 43, Woods achieved his 82nd PGA Tour title at the Zozo Championship in 2019, tying with Snead. Notably, Woods has won a total of 15 major championships and has completed the career Grand Slam three times, showcasing his dominance in the sport.

Throughout his career, Woods has managed to win in different age brackets, with 46 wins in his 20s, 33 wins in his 30s, and 3 wins in his 40s. His success on the PGA Tour is further highlighted by his 18 World Golf Championships victories and his achievement of at least five wins in 10 different seasons, a PGA Tour record. Additionally, Woods has won seven tournaments at least five times, another PGA Tour record that showcases his consistency and dominance in the sport.

Woods’ winning percentage of 22.8 in his 359 career PGA Tour starts surpasses legends like Ben Hogan and Sam Snead. His ability to win in various states and by significant margins, like his 15-stroke victory at the 2000 U.S. Open, further solidifies his legacy as one of the greatest golfers of all time. Woods’ remarkable record in playoffs and come-from-behind victories demonstrates his mental toughness and ability to perform under pressure, contributing to his unparalleled success on the PGA Tour.

In terms of earnings, Woods has amassed an impressive $120,954,766 over his career, averaging $324,275 per start and $1,475,058 per victory. These figures not only reflect Woods’ exceptional talent and success on the PGA Tour but also his ability to capitalize on his success both on and off the course. As Woods continues his pursuit of golfing greatness, his legacy as one of the sport’s most iconic figures is firmly established through his numerous achievements and records.
