Chris Gotterup had a standout performance at the inaugural Myrtle Beach Classic, showcasing his skills and earning his maiden victory on the PGA Tour. The Oklahoma alum shot a PGA Tour-best 64 in the second round to take a one-shot lead into the weekend. He continued his impressive play with a 65 in the third round, building a four-shot lead and tying the largest lead after three rounds on Tour this season. Despite stumbling with back-to-back bogeys in the final round, Gotterup rallied with birdie-eagle-birdie over the next three holes and cruised to a six-shot win, finishing at 21 under.

The victory was a special moment for Gotterup, who celebrated with his family on Mother’s Day as they watched him secure his first win on Tour. Despite a shaky start, he managed to maintain his composure and finish strong, with birdies on three of his last four holes. This win not only earned Gotterup a first-place check of $720,000 but also secured his spot in the upcoming PGA Championship at Valhalla, his second major start after the 2022 U.S. Open. He is also the fourth rookie to win on the PGA Tour in 2024, illustrating his potential as a rising star in the world of professional golf.

In his 27th start on the PGA Tour, Gotterup’s victory marked the seventh first-time winner and the second in as many weeks in 2024. The field at the Myrtle Beach Classic featured notable players like Ryan McCormick, Beau Hossler, Kevin Yu, Ryan Fox, and Jorge Campillo, who all tied for fourth at 15 under. Additionally, Alex Smalley, who tied for 20th at 11 under, received good news when he was added to the PGA Championship field after Steve Stricker withdrew Sunday morning. The competition was fierce, with players showcasing their skills and aiming for top finishes.

As Gotterup continues to make a name for himself on the PGA Tour, his performance at the Myrtle Beach Classic solidified his status as a talented golfer to watch. His ability to handle the pressure and deliver when it mattered most is a testament to his skill and determination. With his family by his side to celebrate this milestone victory, Gotterup’s journey in professional golf is off to an impressive start. He joins a select group of first-time winners in 2024, showcasing the depth of talent on the PGA Tour.

Looking ahead, Gotterup’s victory sets the stage for his upcoming appearance at the PGA Championship, where he will compete against the best in the world. His success at the Myrtle Beach Classic is a stepping stone towards achieving his goals in the sport and establishing himself as a force to be reckoned with. With a promising future ahead, Gotterup’s win is just the beginning of what could be a successful career in professional golf. Stay tuned for more exciting performances from this rising star as he continues to make his mark on the PGA Tour.
