Scheffler rises to PGA title contention, overcoming putting struggles

The PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club witnessed a bizarre series of events as world no.1 Scottie Scheffler was released from jail just in time for his second-round tee time and managed to shoot a five-under-par 66, putting him just three shots off the lead held by Xander Schauffele. Scheffler’s arrest occurred after he attempted to drive around a police cordon following a road closure due to a fatal car crash near the club’s entrance. Unaware of the severity of the accident, Scheffler was taken into custody by local police officers for reckless driving and failing to follow instructions.

After being charged, Scheffler was able to return to Valhalla shortly before his tee time, which was delayed by 80 minutes due to the traffic accident. The golfer later stated that he had been shaken up while waiting to be charged and was unsure if he would be able to continue playing in the tournament. Despite the chaotic situation, Scheffler managed to maintain his composure and focus on his game, eventually shooting an impressive 66.

Scheffler’s performance put him in contention to keep his grand slam dreams alive, with Xander Schauffele leading the pack at 12 under par. Collin Morikawa, Sahith Theegala, and Bob MacIntyre also made significant moves on the leaderboard with strong rounds. On the other hand, Rory McIlroy had a disappointing day, slipping seven shots off the lead and needing a strong weekend to end his major drought.

As the weather improved in the afternoon, scoring conditions also improved for most players, except for Tiger Woods who struggled with two triple bogeys. Woods will miss the cut at seven over par, along with several other players who are not under par. With the top 70 players plus ties making the halfway cut, it is likely that only those under par will advance, including Jon Rahm, Matt Fitzpatrick, and Ludvig Aberg, who finished on level par.

Overall, the PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club provided fans with a mix of drama and impressive performances, showcasing the resilience and skill of the world’s best golfers. Despite the unusual circumstances surrounding Scottie Scheffler’s arrest and subsequent release, he managed to deliver a solid performance and remain in contention for the title. As the tournament progresses, all eyes will be on the leaders as they battle it out for the prestigious PGA Championship crown.
