Louisville mayor confirms police officer did not have body camera activated during Scottie Scheffler’s arrest

Louisville mayor Craig Greenberg recently made a statement regarding the arrest of golfer Scottie Scheffler, stating that the police officer who arrested him either did not have his body camera activated or was not wearing one at the time of the incident. Scheffler was arrested on Friday morning outside Valhalla Golf Club, charged with second-degree assault of a police officer, criminal mischief, and reckless driving. The incident occurred as Scheffler attempted to enter the club, allegedly driving past a police officer against their instructions, resulting in injuries to the officer. Scheffler’s lawyer has disputed the nature of the incident, claiming his actions were in response to traffic signals given by another officer directing him.

Scheffler’s attorney, Steve Romines, stated that multiple eyewitnesses confirmed Scheffler was not in the wrong and was following directions given by another officer. Romines asserted that Scheffler immediately stopped when directed and did not assault any officers with his vehicle. An arraignment for Scheffler is scheduled for May 21, but with the absence of body camera footage from the arresting officer, the situation remains unclear. Greenberg mentioned that the officer, Bryan Gillis, did not have his body camera activated during the incident, and there is no available footage of the initial contact between Scheffler and Gillis.

Despite the lack of video evidence from the officer, Greenberg indicated that there may be footage available from a camera across the street that could shed more light on the arrest of Scheffler. Despite the legal troubles, Scheffler returned to Valhalla Golf Club on Saturday, shooting a second-round 66. He is scheduled to tee off for Round 3 at 1:29 p.m. The incident has garnered significant attention, raising questions about the circumstances surrounding Scheffler’s arrest and the actions of the police officer involved. The release of any additional footage may provide further clarity on the situation and help determine the next steps in the legal process for Scheffler.
