The PGA Championship at the Valhalla Golf Club was marred by tragic events on Friday morning, as a pedestrian was killed by a bus and World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler was arrested for allegedly trying to drive his car past a police officer at the entrance. Harris English, one of the first competitors to finish his round, was shocked by the news and discussed how the entire PGA Tour community was affected by the incidents. Tee times for the second round were delayed due to the traffic issues caused by the pedestrian accident, leading to a somber atmosphere on the course.

English arrived at the course early in the morning and witnessed the aftermath of the pedestrian accident, with police cars and a sense of confusion present at the scene. He took a different route to the course than Scheffler, who later faced arrest, and reflected on how easily any player could have been in the same situation. The tragedy of a life lost on the way to a golf tournament was a stark reminder of the fragility of life.

Collin Morikawa, who took the lead in the morning wave with a stellar round, expressed his condolences for the person who had passed away and emphasized the importance of acknowledging the loss amidst the chaos of the day. Mark Hubbard and Xander Schauffele also commented on the strange circumstances surrounding the events, with Hubbard highlighting the distractions caused by social media and the focus on sensational stories rather than the tragedy that occurred.

As players encountered difficulties reaching the course due to the traffic delays, some resorted to walking on the road or finding alternate routes. Austin Eckroat, who managed to maintain his focus and shoot a solid round despite the disruptions, described the morning as a series of strange incidents that he had never experienced before. The resilience and adaptability of the players in the face of unexpected challenges was evident throughout the day.

Despite the disruptions caused by the tragic events at Valhalla, the PGA Championship continued with the competition unfolding on the course. The contrast between the joy of playing golf and the sobering reality of life’s unpredictability was a poignant reminder for all involved. The solidarity and support shown among players, caddies, and officials in the wake of the incidents underscored the strength of the golf community in times of adversity. The resilience and professionalism displayed by the competitors throughout the day reflected the spirit of the game and the determination to carry on despite the challenges faced.
