Jeremy Wells, a club pro from Fort Myers, Fla., impressed with a smooth 69 in the first round of the PGA Championship at Valhalla, leading the non-touring professionals. Wells attributed his excellent round to a stress-free mindset, with 15 greens in regulation and two near-hole-outs, stemming from a successful practice round the day before.

During his practice round, Wells had the opportunity to play with Max Homa and Scottie Scheffler, which helped settle his nerves and provide valuable experience. Despite feeling nervous and heightened during the round, Wells found the players to be welcoming and kind, allowing him to hit the ball well and survive the pressure. This experience was crucial for Wells in preparing for the PGA Championship.

Compared to his previous experience at Oak Hill, where he missed the cut, Wells took a more measured approach this year, avoiding overdoing it with practice rounds. After realizing that he may have overtrained in the past, Wells developed a systematic plan for this year’s tournament, leading to a more relaxed and fruitful performance on the course.

Wells also mentioned the importance of his performance in motivating his associates back home in Fort Myers, who are slow-playing their PGA book work. By showcasing his success at the PGA Championship, Wells hopes to inspire his colleagues to step up their game and take advantage of the opportunities available to them as club professionals.

The positive impact of Wells’ round at the PGA Championship extends beyond his personal success, serving as a source of motivation for other non-touring professionals and aspiring club pros. By showcasing his skills on a national stage, Wells has proven that with dedication and a strategic approach to preparation, even non-touring professionals can compete with the best in the world.

As Wells continues his journey at the PGA Championship, he remains focused on maintaining his strong performance and inspiring others in the golf community. With his newfound confidence and experience from this year’s tournament, Wells is poised to make a significant impact in the world of professional golf, both on and off the course.
