Getting your mind and body ready for a round of golf is crucial, and having a solid warmup routine can make a big difference in your performance. Tour players have a disciplined range routine that helps them prepare for their rounds, and you can adapt some of their strategies to maximize your warmup time. By following a structured approach and focusing on what you need to do on the course, you can set yourself up for success.

Instead of just grabbing your favorite club and hitting a few shots, try following a methodical system of warming up with different clubs. Tour players often alternate clubs day to day to spread the work throughout their bag and avoid wearing out certain clubs prematurely. By taking a few minutes to hit every other club in your bag, you can get a feel for each club’s performance and prepare yourself for the variety of shots you’ll face on the course.

After going through your bag, it’s important to simulate the first few holes of the course to mentally prepare yourself for what lies ahead. By envisioning the shots you’ll need to hit on the first few holes and going through your full routine for each shot, you can build confidence and set the tone for your round. Tour players often finish their warmup by “playing” the first five to nine holes shot by shot, which can help them get in the right mindset before teeing off.

The key to a successful warmup is transitioning from getting your body ready to getting ready to play shots. This means focusing on different clubs and targets to simulate the variety of shots you’ll encounter during your round. Simply hitting the same club repeatedly won’t give you an accurate picture of what you need to work on or prepare for, so it’s important to have a plan, a purpose, and some variety in your warmup routine.

By spending just 10 minutes on a structured warmup routine that includes a mix of clubs and targets, you can increase your chances of starting your round on a positive note. Whether you’re warming up for a casual round with friends or a competitive tournament, taking the time to prepare your mind and body can improve your performance and enjoyment of the game. Next time you head to the course, take a page out of the tour player’s playbook and give yourself the best chance of success by following a thoughtful and intentional warmup routine.
