Viktor Hovland considered withdrawing from Valhalla field but now has a shot at winning PGA Championship 2024

Norwegian golfer Viktor Hovland recently made a comeback at the Valhalla tournament after a series of disappointing performances earlier in the season. Hovland had been struggling with his game, recording only one top-20 finish in 2024 after a strong finish to the previous year. He had made changes to his coaching team and was feeling lost on the course before reuniting with his long-time coach Joe Mayo, who helped him rediscover his game.

During a post-round interview, Hovland revealed that he had considered withdrawing from the Valhalla tournament due to his poor form. However, a breakthrough moment with Mayo sparked a turnaround in his performance. Mayo identified a specific feel that Hovland needed to recreate in his swing, which instantly improved his play. Hovland was surprised at how quickly things fell into place after working with Mayo, as he had expected the process to take much longer.

Hovland’s improved performance at Valhalla was evident in his ball-striking and strokes gained metrics. He had made significant gains in his ball-striking during the tournament, ranking fifth in strokes gained/tee to green through three rounds. The real test would be the final round on Sunday, where Hovland hoped to capitalize on his improved game and secure a strong finish.

Hovland’s struggles earlier in the year were a stark contrast to his strong finish in 2023, where he had been playing exceptionally well. The changes in his coaching team and his own game had caused him to spiral into a period of uncertainty and poor results. However, his reunion with Mayo seemed to have reignited his confidence and allowed him to recapture his form on the course.

As Hovland headed into the final round at Valhalla, he was focused on translating his improved play into tangible results. He was determined to avenge his close call at Oak Hill the previous year and overcome the challenges he had faced in 2024. With Mayo’s guidance and his own dedication to improving, Hovland was optimistic about his prospects for success in the remainder of the tournament and the rest of the season.
