Gary Woodland, 2019 U.S. Open champion, is feeling like a sophomore on the PGA Tour despite being a veteran, thanks to the challenges he has faced since the 2024 season. Dealing with symptoms from a brain lesion and the after-effects of a craniotomy, Woodland is on a journey of recovery and rediscovery of his game. The recent Wells Fargo Championship served as a reminder of his struggles just a year prior, but he is feeling more positive and excited about the progress he has made.

Woodland’s health issues began to surface after the 2023 Masters, leading to troubling symptoms such as shaking, tremors in his hands, and fatigue during the Mexico Open at Vidanta. After undergoing surgery in September 2023, he made a swift return to the PGA Tour just 115 days later, though he now reflects that he may have come back too early. Despite missing cuts in over half of the events leading up to the 2024 Charles Schwab Challenge, his recent round at Colonial Country Club showcased his potential when feeling his best.

During the second round of the Charles Schwab Challenge, Woodland displayed a strong performance with seven birdies and an eagle, finishing with his best round since the 2022 Genesis Scottish Open. Reflecting on his progress, Woodland acknowledges the challenges he still faces but expresses a newfound sense of positivity. While there were a few miscues in the round, including a bogey on an easy hole, he is positioned well at 4 under through two days of play, just a few shots off the lead midway through the event.

Woodland’s all-around strong performance at Colonial Country Club, where he excelled in driving, iron play, ball control, and putting, has given him a confidence boost. He appreciates the support and encouragement he has received during his recovery journey and looks forward to continuing his progress in the future. Despite the setbacks he has faced, Woodland is determined to push forward and rediscover his peak performance on the PGA Tour.

As he navigates the challenges of balancing his health with his professional golf career, Woodland remains grateful for the opportunity to compete at the highest level. With a renewed sense of optimism and determination, he is focused on regaining his form and returning to the winner’s circle. The support and love from fans and colleagues have played a significant role in Woodland’s recovery journey, and he remains grateful for the encouragement he has received.
