A 39-year-old emerges victorious at the U.S. Amateur, surprising even himself by defeating younger competitors

The U.S. Amateur golf championship is typically dominated by younger players, but this year, 39-year-old oil and gas landman Jimmy Ellis of Atlantic Beach, Fla., surprised everyone by finishing as the medalist in stroke play with a score of 10-under 132. Ellis’s impressive round of 61 at Chaska Town Course on Tuesday is the second-lowest 18-hole round in U.S. Amateur history, only behind Billy Horschel’s 60 in 2006 at the same course.

Ellis, a mid-amateur (25 years and older), became the first mid-amateur to medal at the U.S. Amateur since 2013. He qualified for the championship by winning the 2024 Florida State Amateur in June and has a background playing college golf at Ohio University. Ellis has showcased humility and self-deprecation despite his success, mentioning that he feels like an underdog compared to the younger competitors.

The fact that Ellis is a father of two, works as a buyer of mineral rights and royalties, and had to purchase golf balls and gloves at the pro shop highlights his unique position in the tournament. His move to Florida and practice rounds with young talent like Miles Russel have helped sharpen his game, leading to his standout performance at the U.S. Amateur. Despite the age gap and different circumstances, Ellis has proven that good golf transcends these differences.

In the upcoming match play rounds, Ellis will face off against younger opponents who may excel in distance off the tee, but his steady game and experience will certainly give him an edge. With the top 64 players moving into match play, Ellis remains confident in his abilities despite acknowledging the physical advantages of his competitors. His approach to the game as a seasoned player facing off against juniors and college men adds an intriguing dynamic to the championship.

Ellis’s unexpected success at the U.S. Amateur serves as a reminder that age and background do not necessarily determine golfing prowess. As he continues to navigate the tournament against younger and more favored opponents, Ellis’s story resonates with fans who appreciate the underdog spirit and the unpredictability of golf. His journey at the U.S. Amateur showcases the essence of the sport, where talent, perseverance, and a love for the game can lead to remarkable achievements.
