According to the mayor, Scottie Scheffler’s arrest to be investigated for policy violations

Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg has announced an investigation into the officers who arrested professional golfer Scottie Scheffler to determine if they followed protocol. The arrest occurred at the PGA Championship, where detective Bryan Gillis did not have his body camera activated during the incident, violating Louisville Metro Police policy. Greenberg emphasized the importance of investigating such incidents regularly to ensure transparency and accountability.

Chief Jacquelyn Gwinn-Villaroel of the Louisville Metro Police will address the matter further, including a potential involvement of the Professional Standards Unit—an internal affairs arm responsible for investigating policy breaches. The ongoing internal investigation will reveal any policy violations, which will then be addressed according to the department’s disciplinary protocol. Scheffler’s arraignment has been rescheduled to June 3, with his attorney stating that he will plead not guilty to the charges.

The incident leading to Scheffler’s arrest occurred outside Valhalla Golf Club, where he was charged with second-degree assault of a police officer, criminal mischief, and reckless driving. Scheffler allegedly drove past a police officer against their instructions while attempting to enter the club, resulting in injury to the officer. However, Scheffler’s attorney disputes these claims, stating that he was following another traffic officer’s directions and not intentionally causing harm to anyone.

Despite the arrest, Scheffler returned to Valhalla after the incident and performed well in the PGA Championship. He turned in a second-round score of 66 but admitted to feeling worn down by the chaotic situation. However, he bounced back with a final-round score of 65 and ultimately finished in a tie for eighth place. His attorney maintains that Scheffler did nothing wrong and will be exonerated from the charges through litigation.

The situation surrounding Scheffler’s arrest has raised questions about law enforcement practices in Louisville and the adherence to body camera policies. Mayor Greenberg’s call for an investigation and commitment to transparency indicate a focus on accountability within the police department. As the investigation continues, the details of the incident will be closely scrutinized to ensure that the officers involved acted according to protocol.

Ultimately, the outcome of the investigation will determine if any policy violations occurred during Scheffler’s arrest and if disciplinary action is warranted. The conflicting accounts from Scheffler’s attorney and the police highlight the need for a thorough examination of the facts to reach a fair resolution. Scheffler’s performance at the PGA Championship following the arrest demonstrates his resilience and focus on his professional career despite the challenges he faced off the golf course.
