Breaking 90 in golf can be a significant accomplishment for many recreational players. While it may seem like a daunting task, it is actually quite achievable with some strategic adjustments to your game. One of the keys to breaking 90 more often is to focus on improving your scoring on par-3s and par-5s. These holes can have a significant impact on your overall score, so it’s important to approach them strategically.

PGA Tour players typically aim to score no worse than even par on par-3s and par-5s, as these holes can make or break their rounds. By adopting a similar strategy in your own game, you can set yourself up for success and avoid shooting in the 90s. Par-3s and par-5s offer opportunities to stabilize your game and build confidence, so it’s essential to approach them with a clear strategy in mind.

When playing par-3s, it’s crucial to aim for the center of the green rather than going for the pin. By choosing a club that will carry to the center of the green, you can avoid trouble and increase your chances of making par. Additionally, selecting an intermediate target between yourself and the center of the green can help with alignment. Becoming a proficient lag putter can also be beneficial for longer putts on par-3s.

On par-5s, keeping your tee shot in play is essential for scoring well. Taking unnecessary penalty shots off the tee can quickly derail your chances of making par. It’s also important to consider whether going for the green in two shots is worth the risk, especially if there are obstacles near the green. By weighing the risk-reward calculation, you can make smarter decisions on par-5s and avoid costly errors.

By focusing on improving your scoring on par-3s and par-5s, you can increase your chances of breaking 90 more often. Making smart decisions and following a strategic approach to these holes can make a significant difference in your overall score. With proper planning and execution, you can build confidence on par-3s and par-5s and set yourself up for success on the course. Breaking 90 may seem like a lofty goal, but with the right mindset and game plan, it is well within reach for recreational golfers.
