Alistair Docherty had a memorable 30th birthday when his friends surprised him with a sponsor exemption into the PGA Tour’s Myrtle Beach Classic. Born in Saint John, New Brunswick, Docherty moved to Vancouver as a child before settling in Washington state. After graduating from Chico State in 2016, he pursued his dream of playing professional golf on lower-level tours such as the Mackenzie Tour in Canada. However, after missing second stage and facing uncertainty about his future in the sport, Docherty met Sam Riggs of Barstool Sports, who generously provided financial support and encouragement.

Riggs’s assistance came at a crucial time for Docherty, who was contemplating returning to caddying at Silverleaf in Scottsdale. With Riggs’s help, Docherty was able to continue pursuing his passion for golf and competing at a high level. Despite struggling to find success on the Korn Ferry Tour, with only one top-10 finish in 40 starts, Docherty’s fortune changed at the Myrtle Beach Classic when he finished tied for second, earning a substantial prize money of $356,000.

Following his impressive performance at the Myrtle Beach Classic, Docherty earned a spot in the RBC Canadian Open at Hamilton Golf & Country Club. This opportunity allowed him to compete on the PGA Tour, showcasing his talents and determination on a larger stage. Docherty’s journey from uncertainty and financial struggles to earning a spot in a prestigious tournament serves as a testament to his resilience and belief in his abilities. He is grateful for the support he has received, particularly from Riggs and others who have helped him along the way.

Docherty’s success in qualifying for the RBC Canadian Open provides him with a chance to return to his native Canada and compete against some of the best golfers in the world. As he prepares for this opportunity, Docherty remains focused on making the most of his experience and proving his capabilities on the Tour. His determination and perseverance have propelled him to this point in his career, and he is eager to seize this opportunity to further establish himself as a competitive golfer.

For Docherty, the journey to reaching the PGA Tour has been filled with challenges and obstacles, but his passion for the sport and unwavering dedication have enabled him to overcome adversity. As he continues to pursue his dream of success in professional golf, Docherty’s story serves as an inspiration to aspiring athletes and individuals facing similar struggles. His remarkable journey from uncertainty and financial hardship to earning a spot in a prestigious tournament is a testament to his talent, resilience, and perseverance. With the support of those who believe in him, Docherty is determined to make the most of this opportunity and continue his pursuit of excellence in the world of golf.
