Allisen Corpuz Leads at FM Championship: A Surge of Success After Season’s Challenges

NORTON, Mass. — The FM Championship at TPC Boston kicked off with excitement as Allisen Corpuz showcased her remarkable skills, shooting a stellar 7-under 65 to share the first-round lead with Sei Young Kim and Jodi Ewart Shadoff. This performance is a testament to Corpuz’s perseverance throughout the 2023 season, underscoring her unwavering patience and determination.

In a strong finish that included four birdies in her last six holes, Corpuz made her mark by sinking a pivotal 10-foot putt on the par-4 ninth, a move that propelled her into a tie for the lead with Kim. Kim, who played earlier in the morning under relatively calmer conditions, also had a commendable performance, demonstrating her capacity to navigate the challenges of TPC Boston effectively.

Jodi Ewart Shadoff, the last to finish, captured attention with a dynamic style of play, wrapping up her round with four consecutive birdies. "Holed a lot of putts outside 20 feet, so that definitely helps. The last four just showcased good ball striking and some really nice putts," Shadoff revealed, highlighting the skill required to excel on such a competitive stage.

Nelly Korda, a prominent name in women’s golf, returned to TPC Boston with renewed vigor, switching to a blade putter that proved to be a game-changer. With seven birdies, her score of 67 positioned her favorably, marking a significant return to form at a venue that previously held PGA Tour postseason events.

While Corpuz has only one LPGA victory—the prestigious U.S. Women’s Open at Pebble Beach two years ago—her consistency throughout the season, including a few early top-10 finishes, indicates her hard work is beginning to pay off. "It’s a funny game," she acknowledged, reflective of her journey thus far. "Even if it hasn’t been the results I wanted, things are starting to turn the corner a bit."

Kim faced unique challenges during her morning round, contemplating whether the cooler weather would affect the course’s playability. Despite her concerns, she managed to birdie three of the par-5 holes, ending her round with a solid par on the challenging closing hole, which features a daunting ditch in front of the green.

The 2023 LPGA season has been defined by a surprising trend—22 consecutive tournaments crowning different winners, coupled with the intriguing narrative of Korda, who surprisingly has not won any thus far. Following an impressive seven-win season in 2022, Korda recently lost her No. 1 ranking to Jeeno Thitikul of Thailand, who faced her own challenges at the FM Championship.

Thitikul struggled on the par-5 18th hole, an experience that highlights the unpredictable nature of golf. Missing her approach left, she found herself in a precarious position that resulted in a frustrating bogey, finishing with a score of 69. This underlines the pressure athletes face, particularly when navigating formidable obstacles on the course.

Despite the fierce competition, Korda’s performance places her in a tightly packed tier of players tied for third place, alongside notable figures such as Women’s PGA champion Minjee Lee, Celine Boutier, Andrea Lee, and LPGA rookie Gurleen Kaur. Kaur’s qualification through Monday qualifying adds a compelling storyline to her participation in this elite event.

Korda’s adjustments, including her choice of putter and grip, underline her commitment to evolving her game. "I wanted something new," she explained. "I knew I had success with a similar putter last year, so I felt confident making the switch." This strategic decision reflects the meticulous nature of professional golf and the ongoing quest for improvement, no matter one’s standing in the world rankings.

As the FM Championship unfolds, anticipation builds around whether Corpuz can maintain her lead and capitalize on her recent momentum. All eyes are on the participants as they navigate the demanding course at TPC Boston, where connections between athletes and the course become more pivotal than ever. Fans and enthusiasts alike are eager to witness how each contender will tackle the challenges ahead, reshaping their narratives in this remarkable season.

The LPGA continues to evolve, delivering thrilling competitions and captivating stories that highlight the resilience and dedication of its athletes. With the FM Championship now underway, this week promises a significant showcase of talent, as players strive to claim victory and solidify their standings in the rankings. Whether it’s the seasoned veterans like Korda or the rising stars like Corpuz, every round tells a unique story filled with passion, skill, and the unwavering love for the game of golf.
