The conclusion of the BMW Championship has confirmed the six automatic qualifiers for both the International and US Presidents Cup teams. Hideki Matsuyama leads the International standings and will make his sixth Presidents Cup appearance, alongside Sungae Im, Tom Kim, Byeong Hun An, Jason Day, and Adam Scott. Scott will be making his 11th Presidents Cup appearance, with only Phil Mickelson having more at 12. Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele, Collin Morikawa, Wyndham Clark, Patrick Cantlay, and Sahith Theegala are the automatic qualifiers for Jim Furyk’s US team.
The US team will be strong favorites to retain the trophy, boasting a 12-1-1 record since the first Presidents Cup in 1994. Weir and Furyk will announce their six captains’ picks on September 3 to complete their teams. LIV Golf players are ineligible for selection, which means players like Bryson DeChambeau, Joaquin Niemann, and Cameron Smith will not be able to participate. The Presidents Cup will take place between September 26 and 29.
Of the automatic qualifiers, Matsuyama is the only International Team player currently in the top 10 of the world rankings, sitting at seventh. The US team, on the other hand, has five players in the top 10 rankings with Theegala as the lowest-ranked at 15th. The event will be held at Royal Montreal Golf Club in Canada, marking the first time it is being held away from US soil.
