Nelly Korda made history by winning the Chevron Championship and securing her fifth-straight victory, a feat achieved only by legends like Annika Sorenstam and Nancy Lopez. This victory marked Korda’s second major win, adding to her success at the 2021 Women’s PGA Championship. Korda’s stellar performance included shooting three consecutive 69s to finish at a total of 13-under-par, earning her the first-place check of $1.2 million from the $7.9 million purse. Swedish golfer Maja Stark finished in second place, two shots behind Korda and received $666,834 in prize money.

The LPGA is seeing a trend of record-breaking prize money payouts at major events, reflecting the tour’s commitment to increasing rewards for players. In 2023, all five of the tour’s biggest individual events offered historic prize amounts, such as the $12 million payout from the USGA at the U.S. Women’s Open and a $10 million purse from the PGA of America at the KPMG Women’s PGA. The Chevron Championship, formerly known as the Dinah Shore, has seen a significant increase in its purse since Chevron became the sponsor, with a rise of $4.8 million in three years. The title sponsorship has been extended until 2029, indicating a long-term commitment to supporting women’s golf.

Even players who did not make the cut at the Chevron Championship received a significant participation bonus of $10,000, demonstrating the tour’s dedication to supporting all competitors. The tournament’s top prize money payouts were as follows: Nelly Korda claimed the win with Maja Stark in second place, followed by Lauren Coughlin and Brooke Henderson tying for third place. The prizes cascaded down the leaderboard, with each golfer receiving a share of the purse based on their performance in the tournament.

The prize money distribution at events like the Chevron Championship not only rewards top-performing players but also provides valuable financial support to a broader range of competitors, fostering a more inclusive and competitive environment on the LPGA Tour. The increased prize money payouts showcase the tour’s commitment to recognizing and rewarding the talent and dedication of women golfers at the highest level. By extending title sponsorships and continually raising purse amounts, organizers aim to elevate the stature of women’s golf and attract more attention and investment in the sport.

The success of players like Nelly Korda at prestigious events like the Chevron Championship not only highlights individual achievements but also contributes to the overall growth and popularity of women’s golf. As more players continue to showcase their skills and compete at the highest level, the future of the LPGA Tour looks promising, with increased opportunities and rewards for talented athletes. The tour’s emphasis on equitable prize money distribution ensures that players are fairly compensated for their hard work and performance, creating a more sustainable and supportive ecosystem for women’s golf at all levels.
