Bryson DeChambeau alleges he was forced to pay $2 million in extortion following U.S. Open

Golf fans were treated to a wild and slightly scandalous story involving Bryson DeChambeau, broken relationships, a disgruntled employee, and an alleged multi-million dollar extortion scheme. The story, reported by Golfweek’s Adam Schupak, details the fallout between DeChambeau and his former instructor, Mike Schy, who worked with DeChambeau until 2018.

Schy approached DeChambeau in 2023 with a proposal to create affordable junior golf tournaments named after Bryson’s late father, the Jon DeChambeau Memorial Junior Tour. When DeChambeau agreed to fund the project with a non-recourse loan of $125,000 for two years, issues began to arise.

DeChambeau’s agent, Brett Falkoff, claimed that Schy failed to properly set up the organization for the tour, which lacked appropriate bylaws and a viable business plan. As a result, tension grew between the two parties, leading to the eventual collapse of the junior tour just before the 2024 U.S. Open.

Schy, feeling that DeChambeau did not truly intend to support the tour, decided to close it down and publicly criticized DeChambeau for his lack of commitment. DeChambeau, on the other hand, accused Schy of attempting to extort him and his team for $2 million following DeChambeau’s U.S. Open win in June.

DeChambeau defended his actions by stating that his decision was not about the money but about ensuring sustainable investments. He claimed that he wanted to support his community in a different manner with a proper business plan in place.

The ongoing feud between DeChambeau and Schy is expected to be a topic of discussion during DeChambeau’s media appearances leading up to the 2024 Open Championship at Royal Troon. The controversy has brought attention to the complexities of managing partnerships and financial agreements within the golf industry.

Despite the drama surrounding DeChambeau and Schy, golf fans will be eager to see how the situation unfolds and whether it will have any impact on DeChambeau’s performance on the course. The story serves as a reminder of the challenges and disputes that can arise in the world of professional golf, even off the fairways.
