Bryson DeChambeau expresses disappointment over exclusion from USA Olympic team

When Bryson DeChambeau signed with LIV Golf two years ago, he had high hopes that the league would receive Official World Golf Ranking points by now. However, that has not happened, and DeChambeau, along with other players who joined LIV, have faced consequences for their decision to leave the PGA Tour. The most recent repercussion is DeChambeau’s disappointment in not making the U.S. golf team for the 2024 Paris Olympics despite winning his second U.S. Open title and solidifying himself as one of the top players in the world this year.

DeChambeau expressed his frustration during a pre-tournament press conference at LIV Golf Nashville, acknowledging that the situation has not unfolded as he had hoped. Despite his recent success, including a T-6 finish at the Masters and a second-place finish at the PGA Championship, DeChambeau has not been able to earn enough points to secure a spot on the U.S. Olympic team. The limited events that he has been able to compete in for ranking points over the past two years, mainly majors, have put him at a disadvantage compared to other players who have more opportunities to earn points.

Even with his recent U.S. Open victory moving him to No. 10 in the world rankings, DeChambeau still fell short of making the top four Americans in the Official World Golf Ranking. As a result, Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele, Collin Morikawa, and Wyndham Clark will represent the United States in the 2024 Paris Olympics, while DeChambeau misses out on the opportunity to compete for his country.

Despite not being able to participate in the Olympics last year due to contracting COVID-19, DeChambeau has always cherished the opportunity to represent Team USA in various international competitions. While he acknowledges the disappointment of not making the team this year, he remains optimistic about future opportunities. DeChambeau believes that the 2028 Olympics may present a different situation for him and is hopeful that he will be able to compete and earn a spot on the team in the future.

DeChambeau’s remarks at the press conference also touched on the ongoing negotiations between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf, expressing his hope that there would have been an agreement by now or that he would have been able to earn ranking points through LIV events. However, the current situation has not favored him, and he is resigned to accepting the consequences of his decision to join LIV Golf, despite the frustrations and disappointments that come with it.

As the 60 players who qualified for the Olympics were announced, several LIV Golf players, including Jon Rahm and Joaquin Niemann, were included in the field. While DeChambeau may not have made the team this year, he remains focused on his career and future opportunities to represent his country on the international stage. Whether it be in major championships or team competitions, DeChambeau is committed to showcasing his skills and passion for the game of golf at the highest level.
