C.T. Pan Switches Caddies Three Times after Mike “Fluff” Cowan’s On-Course Fall

Long-time PGA Tour caddie Mike (Fluff) Cowen was being treated for “non-serious injuries” at the clubhouse during the final round of the RBC Canadian Open. Cowen slipped and fell on the hilly Hamilton Golf & Country Club course due to light rain, while carrying PGA Tour veteran C.T. Pan’s bag. Despite initial attempts to continue, Cowen was eventually taken for evaluation, and a fan from the crowd stepped in to caddie for Pan until a member of the caddie services team and then Alex Riddell took over for the remainder of the round.

Cowen, a 76-year-old caddie, has been on the bag for C.T. Pan since February and has had a long career as a caddie. He started out with Ed Sabo in 1976, spent two decades with Peter Jacobsen, and then caddied for Tiger Woods during Woods’ 1997 Masters victory. Pan’s wife, Michelle, also stepped in to help caddie for her husband on the back nine during the tournament.

The Rules of Golf allow for a change of caddie at any time, but a player cannot have more than one caddie at a time or change caddies temporarily just for advice. Despite Cowen’s injuries, there has been no extensive information on the extent of his injuries or the severity of the fall. The combination of the hilly course and light rain made conditions tricky for caddies and players alike during the final round of the RBC Canadian Open, leading to Cowen’s fall.

Despite the unfortunate incident with Cowen’s fall, the professionalism and adaptability of the tournament’s caddie services team, as well as the willingness of fans and Michelle Pan to step in and help, highlights the camaraderie and teamwork in the golfing community. Caddies play a crucial role in a golfer’s success, providing essential support and guidance during tournaments. The quick response to Cowen’s fall and the seamless transition to alternative caddies demonstrate the resilience and teamwork prevalent in the sport of golf.

Overall, the incident at the RBC Canadian Open serves as a reminder of the physical demands and challenges that caddies face on the course, and the importance of safety measures to prevent such accidents. Despite the unexpected turn of events, the supportive response and quick solutions provided by the tournament staff, fans, and Michelle Pan showcase the solidarity and teamwork that define the golfing community. Caddies like Mike (Fluff) Cowen play a vital role in the success of professional golfers, and their dedication and resilience contribute to the overall experience of the sport for players and fans alike.
