Charley Hull, an English golfer, made headlines during this year’s U.S. Women’s Open for smoking cigarettes on the golf course, which went viral on social media. The 28-year-old golfer, known for her unique habit of smoking while playing, expressed her concerns about not being able to smoke at the Paris Olympics, which she viewed as a potential hindrance to her performance. Despite acknowledging that smoking relaxes her, Hull vowed to abstain from smoking during the tournament, complying with the rules that prohibit smoking on the golf course.

During a pre-tournament press conference, Hull discussed her smoking habits and how it has been a part of her life, influenced by her family members who also smoke. She admitted to hating smoking but mentioned that it helps her cope with stress, even though she previously vaped as an alternative to smoking. Hull confessed to smoking more than she should during slow rounds on the golf course, indicating a potential addiction that she intends to overcome in the near future. While smoking may have a calming effect on her, she acknowledged the need to quit smoking eventually.

The absence of smoking seemed to have an impact on Hull’s performance in the first round of the Olympics, where she shot a disappointing +9, positioning her in 58th place out of 60 players in the field. The golfer attributed her poor performance to the lack of smoking, suggesting that it may have affected her concentration and relaxation on the course. Despite the setback, Hull remains determined to stop smoking, recognizing the negative implications it may have on her health and performance in golf. As she strives to overcome her smoking habit, Hull is focused on improving her game and competing at the highest level in the sport.
