Cameron Young Makes History with 59-Stroke Round at 2024 Travelers Championship

The Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands has a reputation for producing low scores, and Cameron Young took full advantage of the favorable conditions to shoot an impressive 59. Young’s hot start included birdies on his first two holes, an eagle on the third, and a birdie on the fourth. As the round progressed, it became clear that Young was on pace to do something special.

Young’s father, David Young, who was a golf professional at Sleepy Hollow Golf Club, followed his son’s round wearing a Sleepy Hollow polo shirt and hat. David expressed his joy and relief at seeing his son break through with such a historic round, especially after a frustrating stretch of better play not translating into low scores. Prior to the 59, Cameron Young had been struggling to find his form in recent tournaments.

Despite his amazing performance, Young maintained that he didn’t do anything differently that morning. He went through his usual routine and felt comfortable on the course. As the birdies continued to fall, the crowds following Young grew, especially after he made a 32-foot birdie putt on the ninth hole. Playing alongside Jordan Spieth, Young soaked in the atmosphere and enjoyed the energy from the fans.

This was not the first time Young had posted a low score on the PGA Tour, as he previously shot a 62 at Riviera in 2022. However, the 59 was a significant milestone for Young, who had never achieved that score even in casual rounds. The possibility of a 59 became more real after Young’s impressive tee shot on the 15th hole led to an eagle putt that brought him within reach of the coveted score.

Despite narrowly missing a birdie opportunity on the 16th hole, Young remained focused and executed another brilliant approach shot on the 17th hole. With a birdie putt on the 17th, Young set himself up for a final hole where he needed to par to secure his place in history. Walking up to the final green, Young had the chance to match Jim Furyk’s PGA Tour record of 58, which also happened at TPC River Highlands.

In the end, Young completed his historic round with a par on the 18th hole, securing his place in the record books as the 12th player in PGA Tour history to shoot a 59. The achievement was a fitting tribute to his father, who has supported Young’s golf career every step of the way. Young’s performance at the Travelers Championship showcased his talent and potential on the PGA Tour, marking a significant moment in his career.
