Costco vs. Sam’s Club: The Ultimate Golf Ball Showdown

When the Costco Kirkland Signature Golf Ball first landed on the shelves, it was nothing short of miraculous for golfers everywhere. I mean, who would’ve thought you’d find a high-performing, urethane-covered ball for less than $20 a dozen? It’s like finding gold in the bargain bin! Even the bigwigs in the golf industry were blown away, claiming it was impossible until Costco came along and proved them wrong. Sure, the multiple generations of Kirkland balls that followed have had their ups and downs in performance, but let’s be real—the original still reigns supreme in the hearts of many due to its insane value.

Now, picture this: you’re at Costco, grabbing a hot dog and some golf balls, all for less than what most brands charge for a few sleeves. That’s the beauty of bulk buying! For years, Kirkland has held the crown in the under-$20 urethane market without a worthy contender—until now, that is.

Enter Sam’s Club’s Member’s Mark: The New Kid on the Block

The golf ball landscape is evolving, and Sam’s Club is stepping into the ring with its Member’s Mark Pro Series 2 Golf Ball. Recently, we threw both balls into the testing arena to see how they stack up. We focused on how the new Kirkland Performance+ ball holds up against its new competition, and trust me, this isn’t just a run-of-the-mill warehouse ball duel. Think rotisserie chicken competition—but for your favorite golf gear.

So, does either of these balls have what it takes to dethrone the legendary Pro V1? Spoiler alert: they probably won’t. The real question on everyone’s mind is: which of these warehouse options comes out on top?

Testing 101: How We Did It

To kick off our showdown, we took a scientific approach (don’t worry, no lab coats were harmed in the making of this review). We teamed up with CoolClubs, a trusted name in club fitting and robot testing, and hit the SunRidge Canyon Golf Club in Arizona. With our trusty Trackman and Foresight GCQuad on deck, we collected data at a steady pace, aiming for a 100 mph driver speed, 81 mph for irons, and a greenside shot with wedges at about 40 yards.

Getting Technical: The Numbers Don’t Lie

Before we let our robot friends do their thing, we took a few quick measurements using our Ball Lab gauges. The sample size was smaller than usual, but we just wanted a general idea of the compression, weight, and diameter between the two balls.

  • Compression: Kirkland Performance+ came in at around 97, which is comparable to the Pro V1x and a good jump from older Kirkland models. Sam’s Member’s Mark, on the other hand, sat at roughly 96—slightly softer.
  • Weight: Nothing to write home about here. Both balls were within USGA regulations, and Kirkland was a tad heavier.
  • Diameter: Kirkland also came out on top with a slightly larger diameter, while Sam’s Member’s Mark was on the smaller side but still within acceptable limits.

Who’s More Consistent?

When it comes to consistency, the Kirkland ball held the edge—though both options were fairly comparable across the board. But enough of the numbers, let’s see how these bad boys performed in actual hits.

Driver Data: Let’s Drive!

When we tested the driver data, things got interesting. Here’s how they fared:

BallBall SpeedLaunch AngleSpin RateCarry YardsTotal Yards
Kirkland Performance+145.0413.282,857239.82267.75
Sam’s Member’s Mark144.6413.062,829239.04264.52

From the numbers, you can see that Kirkland nudged ahead with slightly better ball speed and total distance. Sure, Sam’s Mark had a lower launch, but its effective peak height was impressive. The takeaway here is that while Kirkland had a bit more spin, neither ball was a significant standout in that department.

Driver Dispersion: Who’s Got Control?

Now let’s touch on dispersion. Kirkland had the tighter downrange dispersion, giving it a practical edge in performance. This means fewer wild misses and more predictable results on those crucial tee shots.

Iron Assessments: Turning Down the Heat

Moving on to iron data, we found that both balls were pretty much neck and neck, showing nearly identical ball speeds. However, the Kirkland ball produced about 200 additional RPM in spin, a higher flight, and a steeper landing angle. This variance in numbers could explain why Sam’s had a slight distance advantage.

Wedge Wonders: Approach and Around the Greens

We can’t forget about wedge play! Here were the stats:

BallBall SpeedLaunch AngleSpin RateCarry YardsTotal Yards
Kirkland Performance+43.6035.935,56636.7841.83
Sam’s Member’s Mark43.1336.525,30636.1341.18

While both balls were close, Kirkland outperformed Sam’s in terms of speed and spin, but carry and total distance remained fairly similar.

Wedge Dispersion: Control is King

For wedge dispersion, Kirkland showed a bit more consistency overall, while Sam’s Mark was a bit tighter side-to-side. This might appeal to players looking for a little more precision on their approach shots.

The Final Verdict: Which Ball Takes the Crown?

So, which ball is better? Honestly, it depends on what you’re after. If you’re looking for bang for your buck, both the Kirkland and Member’s Mark give you a solid shot without emptying your wallet. You’re getting urethane covers, decent performance, and prices that won’t make your wallet cry.

Kirkland does have some clear advantages, especially off the tee with better total distance and tighter dispersion. Meanwhile, the Sam’s ball might be a better option in certain situations, particularly on lower-launch shots with tricky wind conditions.

Bottom Line: Pick Your Side

Neither ball is perfect, and both have their strengths and weaknesses. If you’re in the market for a cheap urethane option that doesn’t compromise too much in performance, the Kirkland Performance+ still takes the cake as the leading option. But hey, the Sam’s Member’s Mark Pro Series 2 isn’t far behind—it’s more than a worthy challenger.

So, which one are you gonna go for? Either way, you’re bound to get a solid ball that’ll keep your game going without putting a dent in your budget!
