Costco’s Kirkland vs. Sam’s Club Member’s Mark Golf Balls: The Ultimate Showdown

When the Kirkland Signature golf ball made its debut in Costco, it was like a seismic shift in the golf world. A urethane-covered ball for under $20 a dozen? Mind-blowing, right? Experts and brands alike thought it was a far-fetched dream until Costco rolled it out. While the newer versions haven’t quite captured the magic of that legendary launch, they’ve cultivated a dedicated fanbase, driven largely by their unbeatable value.

Costco enthusiasts know the drill: swing by for a hot dog and grab a dozen golf balls for less than what you’d pay for a few sleeves of other brands. It’s like shopping on steroids! For years, Kirkland has reigned supreme in the budget urethane ball arena, mainly because pretty much no one else dared to step into this cost-friendly arena.

But hold on to your golf clubs, because there’s a newcomer in town!

Enter Sam’s Club with Member’s Mark: The Rival in the Wing

If you’re familiar with the golf scene, you’d know that Sam’s Club has launched its Member’s Mark Pro Series 2 golf ball. This game-changer adds competition to a market previously dominated by Costco. So how do these two stack up against each other, you ask? Well, let’s dive in and find out which of these warehouse giants comes out on top!

We recently ran tests comparing these two budget-friendly contenders. We’ve got the latest and greatest Kirkland Performance+ up against the Member’s Mark balls—the battle of the warehouse titans!

Testing Setup: The Science Behind the Swing

To get a solid comparison, we teamed up with CoolClubs, a trusted name when it comes to golf club fitting and robot testing. Most of our action took place at the beautiful SunRidge Canyon Golf Club in Arizona. We racked up a ton of data using Trackman for our drivers and irons, and the Foresight GCQuad for wedges.

For both balls, the driver speed was set to around 100 mph, while the irons were tested at about 81 mph. The goal? Simulate real-world, on-course shots to see how these balls handle the pressure—spoiler alert: they held up pretty well!

Hot Off the Gauges: Initial Findings

Before letting our robotic testers go to town, we took a peek at some key measurements like compression, weight, and diameter. Although our sample sizes were smaller than usual, we wanted a general idea of how these balls compared.

Compression Results:

  • The Kirkland Performance+ measured a solid 97, hitting the sweet spot akin to the Titleist Pro V1x. This is a slight bump from earlier Kirkland versions.
  • Meanwhile, the Sam’s Member’s Mark came in at a slightly softer 96.

Weight and Diameter:

  • Not surprisingly, both balls fell well within USGA rules when it comes to weight. The Kirkland was a pinch heavier, but nothing too noteworthy.
  • On average, the Kirkland also had a larger diameter, while the Sam’s brand was a bit smaller.

Consistency Counts: Which Ball Wins?

Looking at our test sample, Kirkland had a slight edge in consistency. However, the differences were minor, so calling it a "quality advantage" would be a stretch. But what about performance on the course?

Driver Data: Let the Numbers Roll

Now we get to the juicy part—the performance statistics from our driver tests!

BallBall SpeedLaunch AngleSpin RateCarry YardsTotal Yards
Kirkland Performance+145.0413.282,857239.82267.75
Sam’s Member’s Mark144.6413.062,829239.04264.52

Observations from Driver Data:

  • The Kirkland produced about 0.5 mph more ball speed on average.
  • Despite a lower launch angle, the Member’s Mark achieved a higher peak trajectory.
  • When it came to total distance, the Kirkland edged out Sam’s—likely due to its steeper descent angle.

Dispersion and Consistency with the Driver

While we need to take wind into account for on-course performance, the Kirkland Performance+ had a notably tighter shot dispersion. This means fewer erratic shots and more confidence at the tee.

Moving to the Irons: 7-Iron Data

Next up, we put both balls to the test using a 7-iron. Here’s how they fared:

BallBall SpeedLaunch AngleSpin RateCarry YardsTotal Yards
Kirkland Performance+117.5719.244,951167.41176.93
Sam’s Member’s Mark117.5819.114,714168.22178.92

Key Takeaways:

  • Ball speeds were almost identical, thanks to similar compression rates.
  • However, the Kirkland produced more spin and peaking height, which helps land the ball steeply—not a bad trait for an iron shot!

Wedge Data: The Final Challenge

Finally, we took both balls out for wedge testing, replicating greenside chips and pitch shots.

BallBall SpeedLaunch AngleSpin RateCarry YardsTotal Yards
Kirkland Performance+43.6035.935,56636.7841.83
Sam’s Member’s Mark43.1336.525,30636.1341.18

Insights on Wedge Performance:

  • The Kirkland ball produced more spin and a bit of extra ball speed.
  • Total yardage was similar for both, yet Kirkland showcased a tad more control with its spin rates.

The Final Verdict: Which Ball Reigns Supreme?

At the end of the day, your choice between the Kirkland Performance+ and Sam’s Member’s Mark Pro Series 2 largely depends on what you value.

If you’re after sheer value, both options deliver. Urethane-covered balls that don’t sacrifice performance for price? Yes, please! The Kirkland has some clear advantages, like better total distance with the driver and a smoother dispersion profile that adds a layer of comfort.

For irons, both balls performed closely, with Member’s Mark slightly outdoing Kirkland in dispersion. And while both balls provide decent spin rates around the greens, Kirkland usually edges ahead in overall appeal.

So, if you’re looking for a budget-friendly urethane option that you can count on from tee to green, Kirkland Performance+ still holds the crown, albeit with strong competition coming from Member’s Mark. No ball is perfect, but in this warehouse battle, the numbers do lean a little more favorably toward Costco’s offering.

Bottom Line

If you’re ready to snag some killer golf balls without breaking the bank, don’t hesitate—check out both the Kirkland Performance+ and Member’s Mark options! Your wallet and your golf game will thank you. Happy golfing!

Feel free to explore more about each option at their respective retailers, and remember – whether you’re at Costco or Sam’s, you’ll get great value without sacrificing quality!
