Can This Tour winner maintain two handicaps under the rules?

Chris Kirk, a six-time PGA Tour winner, has displayed his versatility by being proficient at playing golf from both his dominant right side and his non-dominant left side. Kirk began playing left-handed as a child, and over time, he has become quite skillful at it. He even mentioned recently that he shot an impressive 84 as a lefty, just two strokes off his personal best. Kirk enjoys the challenge of playing left-handed and is on a mission to break 80 from that side.

Playing lefty is not just a hobby for Kirk; he has played so much from that side at his home club in Georgia, Athens Country Club, that he is considering establishing a “left-handed handicap” to participate in club events as a left-handed amateur. However, he was informed by the USGA’s handicapping department that he must establish a Handicap Index based on his dominant hand and cannot have separate handicaps for each side. This means that Kirk can only maintain one handicap, and it must be based on rounds played with his dominant hand.

Despite the setback of not being able to establish a separate left-handed handicap, Kirk can still take pride in the fact that he can beat most golfers playing left-handed without the need for strokes. His dedication to improving his game from both sides showcases his love for the sport and his desire to challenge himself in new ways. Kirk’s story serves as an inspiration for golfers looking to push their boundaries and explore different aspects of their game.

For golfers interested in obtaining a handicap, they can register for one through the appropriate channels. Having a handicap can help players track their progress, compare their skill level to others, and participate in tournaments and club events. It is an essential tool for serious golfers who want to improve their game and compete at a higher level. Whether playing right-handed, left-handed, or both, having a handicap can enhance the overall golfing experience.
