Charlie Woods, son of superstar golfer Tiger Woods, had a tough debut in a national championship at Oakland Hills Country Club, shooting a disappointing 12-over 82. Despite striking the ball decently, Charlie struggled with distance control and had five double bogeys and four bogeys against just two birdies on the 6,808-yard, par-70 layout. Tiger Woods, a nine-time USGA champion, walked every step of the way with his son, attracting a significant crowd that followed their every move.
USGA officials estimated a crowd of 800 to 1,000 spectators for the first round of the U.S. Junior Amateur, a remarkable turnout for the event. The club saw an increase in volunteer rolls after Charlie qualified for the championship. Tiger, fresh off a missed cut at the 152nd Open, attracted a sizable crowd that necessitated additional marshals and security personnel to keep the spectators at bay. Both Tiger and Charlie wore attire from the Sun Day Red brand.
Charlie Woods started his round with three pars but struggled with consecutive bogeys and double bogeys on the front nine, eventually finishing with a birdie at the par-5 fifth hole. He hit only eight fairways and seven greens in regulation for the day, with three three-putts adding to his struggle. After signing his card, Charlie did not speak to the media and appeared visibly disappointed with his performance.
Despite the challenging day, playing partner Chase Kyes shot even-par 70 with three birdies and three bogeys, while Davis Ovard finished with a 73. Kyes downplayed the pressure of having Tiger Woods watch him play, acknowledging that the focus was on Charlie’s performance. The trio was scheduled to play the more difficult South Course for the second round, but play was halted due to dangerous weather, leading to uncertainty about the start time for round two.
The low 64 players advance to match play in the U.S. Junior Amateur, with the early leader being Tyler Watts of Huntsville, Ala., who posted a 5-under 65 on the North Course. Despite his tough start, Charlie Woods is praised by his peers for his talent and potential in the game of golf. The experience of competing in a national championship alongside his father is valuable for his development as a young golfer, with the support and guidance of Tiger Woods serving as a strong foundation for his future in the sport.
