Choosing between Srixon ZX4 MK II and ZX5 MK II irons: Finding the best fit for your game

When browsing through a pro shop, golfers may come across the Srixon ZX4 Mk II and the Srixon ZX5 Mk II irons, which may appear quite similar cosmetically. However, these clubs were designed for different types of players, and their differences could significantly impact a golfer’s game. Both clubs share some technologies and can be blended together by custom fitters to create a combo set, but understanding their distinctions is important in deciding between the two.

The ZX4 Mk II features a forged 1770M stainless steel face attached to a 431 stainless steel body, with a hollow chamber in the center of the head to allow for more efficient face flex at impact and increased ball speed. On the other hand, the ZX5 Mk II has a forged SUP10 stainless steel face attached to a forged 1020 carbon steel chassis, providing a softer feel at impact. Additionally, the ZX5 Mk II features tungsten in the sole of the long and mid-irons to lower the center of gravity and promote higher-flying shots.

Both the ZX4 Mk II and the ZX5 Mk II irons incorporate Srixon’s MainFrame technology, consisting of ridges and cutout areas on the face to enhance flexing and reduce weight. The clubs also feature a Tour VT Sole for better turf interaction and speed through the hitting zone, as well as a progressive groove design to optimize spin and stopping power across different iron numbers. The ZX4 Mk II has a longer blade length, thicker topline, and more offset compared to the more compact ZX5 Mk II.

In terms of player suitability, the ZX4 Mk II falls into the game-improvement category with its larger size and hollow body construction, offering increased forgiveness and distance potential. On the other hand, the ZX5 Mk II is geared towards providing more spin, allowing players to shape shots more easily and achieve a higher launch angle. Golfers looking for distance and forgiveness may lean towards the ZX4 Mk II, while those prioritizing feel, control, and forgiveness could be better suited for the ZX5 Mk II.

Ultimately, the best way to determine the ideal irons for your game is to work with a professional custom fitter, utilize a launch monitor to gather data, and compare performance metrics between the ZX4 Mk II and ZX5 Mk II. By understanding the construction, technology, and intended player profiles of these Srixon irons, golfers can make an informed decision based on their individual preferences and playing style.
