The LPGA has seen a remarkable 2024 season with Nelly Korda’s seven wins and Lydia Ko’s fairy-tale season, leading to questions about whether the tour is capitalizing on the moment in the wider landscape of women’s sports. Commissioner Mollie Marcoux Samaan has received high marks from supporters like Terry Duffy, who recently extended the CME Group’s partnership with the tour through 2027. Despite some rocky moments in the past, Duffy believes the tour is on an upward trajectory under Marcoux Samaan’s leadership.

In a recent interview, Duffy gave Marcoux Samaan an A++ rating for her tenure as commissioner. He values the growth and progress he has seen in the LPGA over the past few years and credits Marcoux Samaan for his continued support of the tour. He believes her leadership has been instrumental in attracting sponsors and driving the tour forward. Duffy also applauds Marcoux Samaan’s dedication to the tour and her overall vision for its future.

While some critics question whether the LPGA is maximizing its potential, Duffy points to the success of other women’s sports like basketball and the impact of star players like Caitlin Clark. He emphasizes the importance of recognizing the unique contributions of players like Korda and not comparing them to legends like Tiger Woods. Duffy stresses the unfairness of blaming the tour leadership for all shortcomings and acknowledges the challenges Marcoux Samaan faces in her role.

Duffy appreciates the certainty and stability that Marcoux Samaan’s leadership brings to the tour, acknowledging the pressure she faces in managing a member-owned organization like the LPGA. He believes her long-term vision is focused on building a sustainable future for the tour and providing young women with opportunities to grow and develop through the game of golf. While increasing purses are important, Duffy’s ultimate measure of success is the positive impact the LPGA has on young people’s lives, whether they pursue a career in professional golf or not.

Overall, Duffy’s support for Marcoux Samaan and the LPGA reflects a belief in the tour’s potential and the positive influence it can have on the next generation of female athletes. Through continued growth, strategic leadership, and a focus on empowering young women, the LPGA aims to solidify its position as a leading force in women’s sports.
