Collin Morikawa, the winner of the 2021 British Open, has been using a blended set of TaylorMade irons in his professional career. These sets often include some prototype P•7CM irons, which are specifically designed for him. By tinkering with prototype cavity-back irons and adding a prototype 4-iron to his bag, Morikawa has been able to fine-tune his equipment to suit his playing style. At the RBC Scottish Open and the British Open, he debuted the next generation of better-player, cavity-back irons from TaylorMade, the P•7CB irons.

The P•7CB irons, which have not been officially released by TaylorMade, are similar in appearance to the P•7MC irons that have been in the lineup for about a year. However, the P•7CB irons have milling marks over the entire hitting surface, while the P•7MC irons do not. This unique feature could potentially enhance spin and give players like Morikawa more control over their shots. The irons also feature a narrow sole and very little offset, catering to the preferences of elite players who prioritize precision and shot shaping.

Despite his solid performance in Strokes Gained: Approach the Green on the PGA Tour, Morikawa’s ranking has slipped from No. 2 in 2020 to 39th currently. With the introduction of the P•7CB irons into his bag, Morikawa may see improvements in his game thanks to the enhanced features of these new clubs. Elite players like Morikawa rely on their equipment to provide the precision and control needed to excel at the highest levels of competition, and TaylorMade’s innovative designs aim to meet these demands.

The introduction of the P•7CB irons into Morikawa’s bag could have a significant impact on his ability to shape shots and control spin on the course. The milling marks on the hitting surface may play a key role in enhancing the performance of these irons for players who prioritize shot control. As Morikawa continues to fine-tune his equipment and adapt to new technologies, his performance on Tour may see further improvements, solidifying his position as one of the top players in professional golf.

In conclusion, Collin Morikawa’s choice to use the TaylorMade P•7CB irons in his bag showcases his commitment to optimizing his equipment for peak performance. The unique features of these irons, such as the visible milling marks and narrow sole, cater to the needs of elite players who prioritize control and precision in their shots. As Morikawa continues to compete at the highest levels of professional golf, his equipment choices will play a crucial role in his success on the course. The blend of tradition and innovation in the P•7CB irons reflects Morikawa’s dedication to staying at the cutting edge of technology in the game of golf.
