The Life of Professional Caddies: Insights from Kenny Harms on LIV Golf

Kenny Harms, a seasoned caddy with an impressive 35-year tenure on the professional golf circuit, has had an enriching career that spans various formats of the game. Notably, he became a part of the LIV Golf League for two seasons, working closely with prominent golfer Kevin Na. Their partnership flourished for 16 years on the PGA Tour, delivering memorable moments and victories before Na transitioned to LIV Golf in June 2022.

Transitioning from the PGA Tour to LIV Golf

In August 2024, Harms and Na went their separate ways, marking the end of an era for the duo who enjoyed significant success on the PGA Tour. During an exclusive interview with Golf Monthly, Harms shared his perspectives on the distinct differences between the two circuits, particularly from a caddy’s viewpoint. He expressed that while the competition levels are high in both leagues, the treatment and conditions provided to caddies on the LIV Tour are markedly superior.

Enhanced Treatment for Caddies on LIV Golf

Harms emphasized that during his time with LIV Golf, caddies enjoyed a luxurious level of treatment akin to that of the players. From seamless airport transfers to inclusive accommodation and meals, the caddies were treated as integral components of the professional golfing experience. Harms stated, “Wherever I’m flying, there’s somebody there waiting for me. They pay for the hotel, and we eat with the players and their families, which is a huge difference.”

Financial Benefits that Come with LIV Golf

A significant advantage for caddies on the LIV Golf circuit is the reduced financial burden they must shoulder compared to the PGA Tour. While personal expenses for dining and entertainment remain the responsibility of the caddy, most other costs are absorbed by LIV Golf. This trend contrasts sharply with the PGA Tour, where caddies often bear the brunt of travel expenses.

Traveling the World: A Caddy’s Dream

Another appealing aspect of working with LIV Golf is the travel opportunities this job entails. Currently, Harms finds himself splitting his time between Singapore and the United States. He pointed out, “We’re going to Australia and Hong Kong, and they’ve been to Korea.” The unique venues and global locations LIV Golf offers inquisitive caddies create an enriching experience.

Missing Out on Majors: A Caddy’s Dilemma

Despite the many positives, Harms also expressed some drawbacks of working within the LIV Golf structure. One of the most significant disadvantages is the absence of Official World Golf Ranking points, which directly affect players’ eligibility for major tournaments. Harms lamented the missing pathway to prestigious championships that were once routine during his tenure on the PGA Tour.

Reflecting on Past Triumphs

While vacationing from the game, Harms reflected on how this transition impacts Na and other players on the LIV Golf circuit. Many of them do not get to participate in the Majors, a fact that Harms considers detrimental. He recalled how Na was once a top player, a familiar face in Major tournaments and how watching from the sidelines was a stark change.

The Emotional Bond of Caddying

For Harms, the experience of caddying is marked by the friendships developed along the journey. After 35 productive years, he misses the camaraderie and bonds forged with players and fellow caddies alike. “I miss my friends, for sure,” he said, highlighting the emotional ties that often go unnoticed in the competitive world of golf.

Contemplating the Future

As of now, Harms is taking a break from professional caddying but has yet to rule out a return to the sport he loves. He emphasized, “Life changes, and with every aspect of life, it’s just part of it.” His future remains uncertain, but one thing is clear—his passion for the game and the thrill of caddying for elite golfers runs deep.

The Unbeatable Thrill of Competition

Harms noted that the adrenaline rush that comes from competing in high-stakes situations is irreplaceable. “There’s no better feeling in the world, especially getting it done and winning,” he reflected. He firmly believes that even after stepping back from the game momentarily, the allure of being back in the competition perennially beckons to caddies like himself.

Conclusion: A Lasting Legacy in Golf

Kenny Harms’s extensive experience as a caddy showcases the complexities and beauty of professional golf. While he enjoys a respite now, his memories and friendships remain as vivid as ever. Whether he returns to the high-stakes world of LIV Golf or the PGA Tour, Harms’ legacy as a prominent figure in professional golf remains unquestionable. The world of professional caddies is nuanced, rewarding, and undeniably intertwined with the heart of the game.
