Cornwall made history by winning the Senior Men’s County Finals for the first time ever, defeating Lincolnshire in a thrilling final day at Torquay Golf Club in Devon. This victory marked the first time a team from the South West had claimed the trophy since its establishment in 2005. After a rain-shortened first day, Cornwall narrowly bested Lincolnshire 3.5-2.5, while Durham also secured a 3.5-2.5 victory over BB&O.

The competition continued with BB&O defeating Cornwall 5-4 and Lincolnshire dominating Durham 7-2 on the second day, leaving all teams on equal match points heading into the final day. Despite losing the morning foursomes to Durham, Cornwall rallied in the afternoon singles matches to secure a 5-4 overall victory. This meant that if BB&O only managed a draw or a narrow win against Lincolnshire, Cornwall would emerge victorious.

In a tense finale, Lincolnshire took a 2-1 lead after the morning foursomes, but BB&O’s Gary Mumford held his nerve to clinch the final singles match against Paul Wharton on the last hole, resulting in a 4.5-4.5 scoreline and handing Cornwall the championship title. Although Lincolnshire had accumulated more game points overall with 14 compared to Cornwall’s 12.5, Cornwall’s two match wins secured their triumph.

The winning team from Cornwall was comprised of Richard Jones, Mike Reynard, Ian Ashenden, Ian Veale, Simon Knowles, Mark Blaber, Mark Johnson, and Guy Norris. On the other hand, Lincolnshire’s Colin Trestrail was named the player of the tournament after winning all five of his matches.

This victory was a momentous occasion for Cornwall, as they showcased their skill and determination in overcoming strong opposition to claim the prestigious title. The team’s success was a testament to their teamwork, resilience, and competitive spirit, as they fought hard in every match to secure their historic win.

The Senior Men’s County Finals provided an exciting and closely contested competition, with all teams showcasing their talents and battling for the coveted trophy. Cornwall’s triumph highlighted the depth of talent in the South West region and marked a significant milestone in the team’s history. The tournament was a showcase of high-level golf and sportsmanship, with players displaying their skills and passion for the game.

The dramatic finish to the tournament added to the excitement and tension of the event, with Cornwall ultimately emerging as worthy champions. The team’s victory will be remembered as a landmark achievement in their golfing history, and will serve as motivation for future success. The Senior Men’s County Finals was a memorable and thrilling event, with Cornwall’s triumph standing out as a shining moment in the tournament’s history.
