Discovering Silverado Resort: A Golfer’s Paradise in Napa Valley

When Johnny Miller first arrived at Napa’s Silverado Resort for the 1968 Kaiser International Open, he was instantly captivated. As an amateur golfer, Miller sensed that this place was more than just a competition venue; it felt like home. His immediate love for the resort’s countryside, picturesque courses, and serene atmosphere led him to return multiple times, ultimately solidifying his connection to this stunning locale.

Miller’s deep bond with Silverado blossomed after he turned professional and married his wife, Linda. Their honeymoon took place in one of the resort’s charming condos, setting the stage for a lifelong love affair with the area. "One thing led to another," he recalls, "and we bought a condo on the sixth fairway of the North Course, then built a house on the lake in ’74." With five of their six children born in Napa, it’s clear that the region is integral to the Miller family’s story.

The Silverado Resort has expanded over the years, now boasting chic and modern accommodations spread across its sprawling 1,200 acres. These include luxurious rooms, suites, and private cottages, each equipped with full kitchens, spacious living areas, and cozy fireplaces. The centerpiece of the resort, the historic White Mansion, dates back to 1870 and offers a lounge and restaurant with stunning views of Milliken Creek.

Add to this the world-renowned Napa Valley spa experience, where guests can unwind in an atmosphere of pure tranquility. The Spa at Silverado features amenities such as a peaceful lap pool, co-ed whirlpool, dry saunas, and eucalyptus steam rooms. A visit is perfect for relaxing after invigorating rounds of golf or wine-tasting excursions. The spa’s 16,000 square foot facility also includes fitness and salon services, ensuring that every guest leaves refreshed and rejuvenated.

Napa Valley is celebrated for its Mediterranean climate, ideal for growing grapes, making it a beloved destination for food and wine enthusiasts. Just 45 miles northeast of San Francisco, Napa Valley marries natural beauty with culinary excellence unrivaled across the United States. It is often compared to the legendary regions of Burgundy or Bordeaux, offering guests easier access to lush vineyards set against breathtaking landscapes.

The culinary landscape of Napa Valley is rich and diverse, with a variety of dining experiences to suit every palate. From casual eateries specializing in burgers and tacos to upscale fine dining establishments, the region has something for everyone. Mustards Grill is a quintessential Napa gem, serving hearty American comfort food, while the charming Model Bakery offers English muffins that should not be missed. The Oxbow Public Market in downtown Napa is another must-visit, featuring delightful treats such as Kara’s Cupcakes and Hog Island Oyster Co.

For foodies wishing to further explore local fare, the charming town of Yountville boasts three-star Michelin restaurants, including the famed French Laundry. Here, culinary artistry is elevated, and patrons can delight in exquisite meals crafted from the region’s abundant resources. Silverado itself offers exceptional dining options, such as The Grill and the Silverado Market & Bakery, ensuring guests experience the local flavors without venturing far from the resort.

In the world of wine, Napa Valley is often referred to as the queen of wine country. This region is celebrated for its sophisticated offerings, from complex Cabernet Sauvignons and vibrant Sauvignon Blancs to smooth Chardonnays and lush Pinot Noirs. Wine enthusiasts can indulge in guided tastings across numerous wineries along Highway 29 and the Silverado Trail, many of which are open from 10 AM to 5 PM. Iconic wineries like Caymus Vineyards, Nickel & Nickel, and Trefethen Family Vineyards are just a short drive from Silverado, allowing visitors to fully immerse themselves in the local viticulture.

Golf lovers won’t be disappointed in Napa Valley either. Silverado Resort features a remarkable 36-hole layout designed by the renowned Robert Trent Jones Jr. The North Course hosts a prestigious PGA Tour event and demands strategy and precision, while the South Course presents its own challenges with dramatic elevation changes. Both courses are cherished by members and guests alike, ensuring a memorable golf experience against a backdrop of stunning Napa Valley vistas.

For those looking to play a different kind of course, Napa Valley offers unique golfing experiences among the vineyards. The Chardonnay Golf Club winds through lush vineyards, while Eagle Vines Golf Club presents a challenging 27-hole layout that incorporates stunning views of the surrounding landscape. Both courses provide golfers a chance to connect with the area’s winemaking heritage, making rounds of golf here a true Napa experience.

In summary, Silverado Resort serves as an engaging hub where breathtaking landscapes, exceptional dining, and world-class golfing converge. From the historic charm of Napa Valley to the tranquility found in its spas and the excitement of its culinary delights, visitors are sure to create unforgettable memories. Whether you’re a passionate golfer, a wine enthusiast, or simply seeking a serene getaway, Silverado Resort offers a slice of paradise that captures the very essence of Napa Valley’s allure.
