Ewen Ferguson secured his third DP World Tour title and a spot at The Open by winning the BMW International Open in Germany with a closing 68, giving him a two-shot victory. Ferguson was tied for the lead with Jordan Smith going into the final round and the two golfers battled it out in an exciting showdown on Sunday. A pivotal two-shot swing on the 14th hole ultimately helped Ferguson secure the win, finishing at 18 under and lifting the trophy with a closing par.
The 28-year-old Scot, who celebrated his birthday the day before, displayed impressive frontrunning skills on a rainy final day at Golfclub München Eichenried. With a combination of birdies and a single bogey on the front nine, Ferguson gained a slight edge over Smith as they reached the back nine. Maintaining his composure, Ferguson continued to play steady golf and extended his lead with back-to-back birdies on the 13th and 14th holes, ultimately securing a three-stroke advantage over Smith.
In addition to his tournament win, Ferguson’s victory also earned him a coveted spot at Royal Troon through the Race to Dubai rankings and catapulted him into the top 100 in the world rankings. Joining him in securing a place at The Open were Jesper Svensson, Laurie Canter, Nacho Elvira, and Matteo Manassero, who finished as the top five players on the Race to Dubai not already exempt. Guido Migliozzi also solidified his position as the winner of the European Swing.
Despite a strong showing, Jordan Smith finished tied for second at 16 under alongside Australian David Micheluzzi, who shot a 68 with a closing eagle. They were followed by Matthew Southgate and Connor Syme, who finished two shots behind. Matthis Besard, Jens Dantorp, and Rikuya Hoshino were tied for sixth at 13 under. Ferguson’s win marked another triumph for Scottish golfers at the BMW International Open, joining the likes of Sandy Lyle and Colin Montgomerie as past champions.
